I give these images as a tribute to my father (Happy Father's Day
Dad!) and for all of your fathers too. Addicts need reasons to do what
they do you know? heh
Last week on the 9th, I took a drive up to the north county to see what
there was to see. Clouds had moved into the area, so I had to make up
for the times in the winter where I resisted the pull of the shutter
finger. I zipped up HWY 58, turned off on some road I had never driven,
ran into HWY 41, searching the whole while for the perfect backdrop to
the immense and ominous looking clouds. Desperation was setting in when
I arrived in Creston, the light was failing fast and I had to find
something as it is very aggravating to drive so much and come back with
nothing. A left turn here, a right there, and I came upon a terrific
road that parallels the hills on the east side of Creston. Perfection!
Glorious! Low clouds, low sunlight, colors that cannot be believed. The
sky's contrast punches up the effect on the hills like nothing other.

When she fully beckons me, I cannot resist. Yesterday, as all of you
looked at the fruit, I was wandering about the redwoods in Limekiln
State Park. Thirty miles north of San Simeon approximately, it is a
wondrous domain. The fog was rolling in, covering the hilltops and
making a mist fall through the forest. There were some campers, but not
many. I saw only a handful of people as I wandered the trails for a few
hours. I tried my best to be conservative in my approach.

A waterhole whose colors cannot be properly interpreted with a camera.
You had to see it to believe it. This is an unfortunate failure of the
now mind numbing color management one must go through in the digital
age.

It took a little while to convince myself of this composition. It is
marred slightly by raindrops on the front element of my extremely wide
angle lens.

I left the park with satisfaction, not yet complete. I was unable to
establish a proper composition of the limekilns themselves. I will
return one of these days to attempt again to capture to my satisfaction
their decrepit beauty and rebirth amongst the forest's guidance.
I drove down HWY 1 with no purpose to shoot another scene, but when I
came upon this blanket of fog on the hills, the soft residue of the sun
past the horizon, and the rocks standing guard to the beach I was
compelled to stop.

Thank God for the reflectors on the highway... after this shot was a
drive by feel session for twenty miles. For those of you familiar with
this stretch of the One, you know how disconcerting that can be.
