Abstract:
-----
Until recently, libraries were the prime source of information for
both students
and scholars. Now this information is published using online with
digital library
systems. Current digital libraries have to provide efficient
information discovery
solutions to adapt to the fast development of new technologies; they
also have
to cater to the current generation of students. The research on the
Semantic Web
and online social networks contributes to the digital libraries domain
by supporting
interoperability with formal semantics, improving interlinking of
information
and encouraging users to contribute and share knowledge.
Semantic technologies support more flexible information management than
that offered by classic digital libraries. Information on library
resources can be
gathered from heterogeneous sources, including contributions from the
communities
of library users. These annotations, combined with legacy data, build
the
foundations for more efficient information discovery in digital
libraries.
This thesis reviews architectures, abstract models, metadata
standards, and
various technologies for building digital library management systems.
We derive
requirements for advanced digital libraries and propose an
architecture model
and a set of ontologies for semantic digital libraries. Finally, we
present information
discovery services using semantic and social technologies, and the
prototype
implementation of a semantic digital library that fulfills the
aforementioned requirements.
Our hypothesis is that semantic and social technologies applied to a
digital
library management system deliver more efficient information discovery
solutions,
while the library users become more satisfied and can remember more of
the information they have learned when using the library. We present
two information
discovery services that use semantic and social technologies; we also
show a prototype of a semantic digital library. We support our
hypothesis by discussing
the results of initial evaluations of both services and a comprehensive
evaluation of the semantic digital library prototype.

Sebastian Ryszard Kruk is the co-founder and CEO of
KnowledgeHives.com, a Web 3.0 startup.
Previously, he was a PhD student, researcher (Semantic Infrastructure
Lab at e-Learning
Cluster in DERI NUI Galway), and project manager (Corrib.org)
affiliated with DERI, National
University of Ireland, Galway and the Gdansk University of Technology
(GUT). His main areas
of interest covers Semantic Web and social networking technologies,
digital libraries, knowledge
management, information retrieval, security and distributed computing.
In 2002, together with prof. Henryk Krawczyk he came up with an idea
of the semantic digital
library which was implemented first at GUT as the Elvis-DL project. In
2004, together with
prof. Stefan Decker he transformed Elvis-DL into an open source
project called JeromeDL,
which was established as a joint initiative between DERI NUI Galway
and GUT. To improve
the quality of JeromeDL system he started the MarcOnt Initiative and
the FOAFRealm project.
Since 2005, both were supported by DERI and GUT under the hood of
Corrib.org. He initiated
the work on the lightweight implementation of HyperCuP protocol. In
2005, as a part of the
FOAFRealm project, he envisioned and delivered first prototype of
Social Semantic Collaborative
Filtering, a unique bookmarks sharing solution. In 2006 he delivered
JOnto component,
a unified API for accessing different knowledge organization systems
(used in e.g. JeromeDL
and FOAFRealm). He initiated work on the Didaskon project, which
delivered a framework for
assembling a curriculum from existing learning objects provided by
e-Learning services. He
also delivered the TagsTreeMaps component for efficient filtering
tagged information spaces;
and the HexBrowser component for representing information space using
the HoneyComb
paradigm. In 2007, he prototyped the MultiBeeBrowse component, a
solution for collaborative
faceted navigation on unstructured metadata. Together with Adam
Gzella, he set up notitio.us
- a social semantic information sources discovery and sharing service.
In 2008, together with Bill McDaniel he edited a book, and contributed
to most of the
chapters, on Semantic Digital Libraries (published by Springer). He
was invited to give four
tutorials (at JCDL, ESWC,WWW) on Semantic Digital Libraries and one on
tutorial on Knowledge
Management with Web 3.0. In 2007, he organized the Irish Digital
Libraries Summit and
co-organized a Workshop on Web Archiving and NKOS Workshop (at ESWC
2006).
He contributes to the Open Source community. He received the best
paper award for the
paper "Semantically Enhanced Search Services in Digital Libraries" at
the International Conference
on Internet and Web Applications and Services, 2006.
