I run the Windows Photo app, it detects the photos and videos on my iPhone, starts to export, then says "something went wrong, your files may not have imported"
I contacted Microsoft and they reinstalled the operating system, didn't work
Called Dell and they wanted $350 to talk to me about fixing the broken computer they sent me, saying it's a software issue. Doesn't seem to be a software issue because all the software has been reset.
My point is I paid for the computer and didn't get what I paid for. And it may work, but I have to deal with the challenges and disorganization I mentioned. I've been a dell and windows guy for 25 years, windows used to work and dell used to be known for it's support. Neither are true anymore, they're charging thousands of dollars and the products they send have defects they don't have the resources to correct, and people like us are left trying to figure our way around said defect
Like Farseeker says, the issue is that what you call "computer names" are actually NetBIOS names. NetBIOS is a protocol of Sytek/IBM's own invention, which has been superceded by a naming service like DNS, so it is generally not supported on non-Windows machines. Linux and Unix machines can use NetBIOS through a thrid-party client called SAMBA, but the iPhone doesn't run SAMBA.
When you're in a windows environment, it can (and does) use NetBIOS to resolve the computer names, so if you do not have a central DNS server (like on a home network), it can still map names to IP addresses.
Either setup an internal DNS, ie one that you company manages themselves with all the server records, if you have an Active Directory domain then you already have a DNS server. Then have dhcp deliver the DNS servers` IP address or manually config as described in the 1st answer.
I have an iphone 12 mini that won't easily transfer photos and videos to free up space. As a result, I can't install any new apps or use the camera, and I'm constantly deleting thing I don't really want to delete.
When I plug the phone in to the PC via the USB cable, Windows recognizes it as a drive and it begins loading preview images in file explorer, but it loses the connection before I can transfer anything. I get the message "The device is unreachable", even though the phone still shows it is charging. This happens with both of my computers, running Windows 8 and Windows 10. I've tried using different cables and different ports, with no success.
I've discovered I can save photos one at a time to iCloud files, visit my iCloud drive via my PC's web browser, and download each file individually. The problem here is that without going through the cable transfer, the files maintain their original, weird Apple file types and aren't converted to more recognizable types. I can use Gimp to export each photo to a normal .png from the bizarre .heic format the iphone uses, but the whole process is extremely time-consuming. Furthermore, the videos don't play at all (even though they're .mov), and I don't have a way to convert them since nothing I have recognizes the encoding.
The most recent thing I've tried is saving the files to icloud, opening the "Files" app on my old iphone (which doesn't have the "unreachable" problem), and trying to transfer to the PC that way. This works for photos, but not for videos, since the icloud UI on the older iphone doesn't give me an option for "Save Video".
I highly recommend giving it a go. It should completely bypass the unreachable error you have when cable connecting. I was able to perform my transfers without paying the "Documents Plus" premium subscription, but if you find your needs can only be met with plus, then they offer a free trial you can use for the time being as well.
For batch converting files to a more friendly format i would give Irfhan View a go. With this app you can set your input/output options and set an almost limitless amount of files to convert and then walk away. After installing the main app, be sure to also install the IrfhanView Plugins as well. The plugins add further support for a much wider range of file types.
I am getting super frustrated as I have reset the network settings on my iPhone 8, reset the location and privacy, restored the whole phone, changed the auto play settings on my computer, turned my computer off and on, played around with the apple mobile device settings, checked th make sure my windows and dropbox app is upto date, I have even tried syncing to another computer with dropbox on it, and NOTHING is working?
Your photos/videos should now start importing, and you should NOT get the "device locked" message. One thing that is unclear to me is if your phone has to remain unlocked during the entire import process. I don't believe it has to be, but you'll have to see for yourself.
**This is the problem. When the iPhone shows up in Windows Explorer, if you double click it immediately, it will show up as empty. Normally, double clicking your iPhone in Windows Explorer should show an "Internal Storage" folder, and inside it should be a "DCIM" folder. For some reason, it takes up to 2 minutes after plugging in the iPhone for these folders to appear. Dropbox can only import files when these folders are working properly.

I must say, this is also an issue which frustrates the living daylights out of me. Uninstalling and reinstalling the iPhone driver (EVERY TIME) seemed to work for a while, but now nothing does. "Dropbox couldn't import photos because Apply iPhone may be locked. Unlock it and try again". It's been months. Can I also please get a personalised response? Or better yet, can this seemingly widespread problem be addressed and fixed centrally?
Hi @Jane, I posted a pretty extensive answer yesterday that I believe addresses the core issue and provides a solution, but it appears my post was deleted from this thread? I posted the same answer on this other very similar thread ( -and-videos/Dropbox-Unable-to-sync-Photos-amp-Videos-as-iPhone...) and it appears to be deleted from that thread as well.
