The Fahrenheit temperature scale is named for German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit and is the temperature measurement commonly used by the United States (and its associated territories) and several Caribbean nations. On the Fahrenheit scale, water freezes at 32F and boils at 212F (at sea level).

I have to do temperature conversions frequently and have been using the "1.8 method" for years. It is far easier than messing with fractions, especially when teaching someone else to do conversions. I can't understand why anyone still teaches the 5/9, 9/5 method.

Some of these situations are completely avoidable. And I want to help you with these problems through the simple process of accurate oven temperature conversions, because the internet is full of incorrect information, and you might have been using that false information. Even some people who write the recipes might be using the wrong information.

But with the industrial revolution in the 1800s, a public gas network was created which gave a reliable supply of gas to people all over the country. Gas stoves were being developed and people started having them in their homes. These ovens had no temperature scale and were controlled simply by adjusting the gas inlet.

What is especially intriguing in the list of cookbook equivalents temperatures is that 120C and 130C both are listed as 250 F, and 200C and 210C are listed as 400F. These are examples of the rounding up or rounding down technique, leaving the values to meet somewhere in the middle! Admittedly (even on metric recipes) there can be only a little difference in these temperatures. However I sometimes knock a recipe up or down by 10C on purpose (such as lowering it to get a slower but more even bake) it clearly does have some small effect on specific recipes.

Remember that on top of all this is that your oven might not be at the temperature that matches your dial anyway, especially if it is a few years old!
There is a way to check (roughly) if your oven is running a bit hotter or colder by relying on the melting point of sugar, which is invariable. I will write a post on how to check using this method (watch this space!).

This post was fascinating to read, by the way I enjoy your writing style. Most importantly to me, as a lot of my blog readers are American/Canadian, is that they convert the temperature correctly. Great, interesting read.

Nitric acid oxidation of cyclohexane accounts for 95% of the worldwide adipic acid production and is also responsible for 5 to 8% of the annual worldwide anthropogenic emission of the ozone-depleting greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). Here we report a N2O-free process for adipic acid synthesis. Treatment of neat cyclohexane, cyclohexanol, or cyclohexanone with ozone at room temperature and 1 atmosphere of pressure affords adipic acid as a solid precipitate. Addition of acidic water or exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation (or a combination of both) dramatically enhances the oxidative conversion of cyclohexane to adipic acid.

This tool calculates equivalent temperature values across several commonly used temperature scales. The Kelvin and Rankine scales are absolute versions of the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales, respectively, meaning that the zero points on these scales reflect a theoretical minimum temperature. In contrast, the zero points on the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales were originally based on observable physical phenomena, such as the freezing point of water.

The standard temperature at the triple point of water is provided by a special cell, an evacuated glass cylinder containing pure water. When the cell is cooled enough so that a mantle of ice forms around the reentrant well, the temperature at the interface of solid, liquid, and vapor is 273.16 K. Thermometers to be calibrated are placed in the reentrant well.

The kelvin temperature scale begins at absolute zero, the coldest possible temperature and the point at which even atoms would stand perfectly still.

I am often hearing fans of the Great British Bake Off (Great British Baking Show) asking about the different types of oven temperatures that exist. My recipes cover all types of oven temperatures because my recipe followers are from all around the world, but I thought it useful to make up this handy table for you to save and print off for future reference.

So in the UK, we use C (Celsius) or Gas mark in our ovens. US & Canadian bakers have ovens which have their temperatures in F (Fahrenheit) and these numbers are much higher, (nearly double the C temperature). What confuses these bakers even more when they want to bake something using a UK recipe, is that there is also often listed a Fan Oven temperature too. So just to clarify, in the UK we have 2 types of C oven temperatures: regular or standard ovens (also known as conventional), which will be simply listed as .. C, and secondly the Fan oven (also known as convection), that will be listed as ..Fan oven .. C. Note that these fan assisted ovens, are hotter and so when setting the temperatures, you do so to approximately 20 C lower than the standard oven temperature.

If however, the recipe is stating fan oven temperature, (and often is in TV programmes), here is an example: 180 C fan oven = 200 C regular oven = 400 F = Gas mark 6. Further examples can be found in the table above.

However, when performing unit conversion between a quantity with a mixed dimensionality (e.g. $[length]^2/[temperature]$), I'm not sure how to properly perform a conversion where the temperature scale changes.

In case #1, you must use an absolute scale, either Kelvin or Rankine. Then the $R$ or $k$ must be converted properly, using the size of the temperature unit. In that case, 1 K (unit) = 1.8 R (unit).

Select one of the 8 letter-designated thermocouple types from the console, type any voltage (mV) within the thermocouples range into the Thermocouple (mV) window and press calculate. The calculator will produce the NIST thermocouple table temperature value for that voltage along with the sensitivity or Seebeck coefficient (dV/dT).

All thermocouple voltages should be entered in millivolts (mV). The Seebeck coefficient (given in mV/C) describes the slope of the reference function at the selected temperature and can be used to calculate the impact of an incremental change in temperature on thermocouple voltage.

The thermocouple table values given by this calculator are based on a reference junction (cold junction) temperature of 0 C (32 F). To calculate the temperature based on a different reference junction temperature, enter the new value in the same units of temperature selected in the calculator.

When using convection, the temperature and time displayed on the oven may be different than what was entered and this is normal. The convection conversion feature is a function that converts a standard thermal bake cook time and temperature into an ideal cook time and temperature for convection cooking. Refer to the Owner's Manual to see if your model has a convection conversion feature and how to use the feature.

When using convection, the fan circulated hot air distributes heat more evenly than the natural movement of air in a standard oven. This movement of hot air helps maintain a consistent temperature throughout the oven, cooking foods more evenly, crisping surfaces while sealing in moisture and yielding crustier breads.

Because of the efficiency of a convection oven, most foods can be cooked at a lower temperature or for a shorter time. Some ovens will automatically reduce standard recipe temperatures and times for cooking when the convection feature is used.

When it comes to temperature conversion (often shortened to temp conversion), it is easy to convert Celsius to Kelvin, however if you want to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, it becomes more tricky... Unless you use our temperature conversion tool!
