I bought an HP v220w 32GB flash drive 2 months ago and it's been working perfectly until yesterday when all of a sudden it became write protected. I've tried evey simple, non technical way to solve the problem (Registry, diskpart, low level format, check for bad sectors, etc) but the issue seems to be much deeper.

I used Chip Genius to get the information about the chip controller and found the matching utilities at usbdev.ru. I downloaded for of them marked with my corresponding chip controller SMI SM3257ENLT.

Now, I'm staring at the MPTool but can't seem to understand what to do with it. There's a "Start" button in it which seems to run a test which Fails. Can anyone help with this? Where do I go from here?

I just got a new hp v220w 32 Gb pen drive which is not recognised ny my iMac running OSx Mountain Lion... It does'nt show up on Disk Utility and i cannot find it anywhere even on Finder... i have checked the finder prefrences....... it is also not shown on my bootcamp windows 7 ...... But all my other pen drives work properly....... The pen drive works perfectly on other Pcs... even on my old pc running windows xp... and my friends pc running windows 7.... I really need the pen drive to work on my iMac Mid 2010.. running mountain lion.....

Wouldn't that be a hardware (USB 3 port vs. USB 2 port) problem rather than having to do with the OS? FWIW, I will be able to check that as soon as I get my new MBP ("being readied for shipment") which has a USB 3 port.

For the OP: I checked the package specifications online and it only shows "high speed" USB which a lot of mfr's use for USB 2; I've noticed that it now usually specificcally mentions USB 3 if it is compatible with that.

Am I mistaken here, I've read a lot of posts about USB 3.0 capable Hard Drives not showing up in Finder (I know the thumb drive isn't a hard drive). I looked for specs online but didn't find any. Seems to be marketed predominantly to the Indian market.

@ RRFS: Well, it could be a Mac with a USB 2 port and the new USB 3 hard drive is not showing? I haven't seen any reports, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything - to me it would still be a logic board/firmware (?) issue since the USB ports are part of it? Just guessing here.... backward compatibility isn't necessarily 100% compatibility?

That's what I am thinking. There were two threads in the last couple of weeks where the OP couldn't get the Seagate USB 3.0 to show up in Finder or Disk Utility. The other was one that would just disconnect itselfafter a minute or two. I think they both gave up and took them back for Firewire 800 docks at the recommendation of those of us who posted. Once I get my new MBP set up and have a minute, I may plug in one of my externals with a USB cord - in this case it would be reversed: iMac has USB 3 port, external has USB 2 port - never used the USB on them since they're Quads (FW 400 + 800, USB, eSata) - worth a try maybe just to test. Just remembered: I do have one portable external, a WD USB drive - that's what I'll try it with.
