FilmmakerSanjay Leela Bhansali has always been known for his aesthetic frames and is fast blossoming into a music director as well, with a penchant for clean, harmonic sound and leaning towards melody and rhythm like the composers of yore.
The album opens with Deewani mastani. The song blends Maharshtrian folk with qawalli notes. Shreya Ghoshal as usual gets the nuance bang on. The mandolin and the percussion combination lend a unique flavor to the composition.
Aaj ibaadat, sung by Javed Bashir, offers an eclectic mix of Hindu and Muslim devotional hymns. The music has Sufi overtones. The sitar portions and the qawaali claps offer a good contrast. This again is an experiment which will appeal only to be people with a bent towards classical music.
The last number in the album is a vigorous ganpati bhajan Gajanana, composed by Shreyas Puranik and sung by Sukhwinder Singh. The singer brings his range into play to give the song the energy it deserves. The fast-paced dhols and cymbals meld into the aarti and turn it into a clarion call.
