The next meeting of Austin ACM SIGKDD, Big Data Machine Learning - Hackers Dojo, is Wednesday, May 9, 2012, 7:00 - 8:00 pm at Northwest Recreation Center. We have the meeting room from 6:30-9:00 pm.

NO MEETING, Wednesday, May 2, 2012. Someone else booked our room.

Jason Baldridge, Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics, University of Texas at Austin,  will be making a presentation on May 16, 2012. The topic is TBA. Dr. Baldridge has co-taught a course on Hadoop and text analytics with Dr. Lease at UT.

We will be continuing our study of support vector machines. At some point we will progress to solving them with stochastic subgradient methods. Our goal is to implement a Hadoop based SVM with a non-linear kernel solved with stochastic subgradient methods.

Work toward the KDDCUP is slow. Hope springs eternal! The competition is over at the end of the month but we will continue in our study of support vector machines until we have an implementation.

If you are interested in semi-supervised learning, I ran across some interesting work on a co-training approach to support vector machines, not s3vm based, that could feed into our Hadoop svm implementation. Check out, "Multiview Point Cloud Kernels for Semi-Supervised Learning" by Rosenberg, Sindhwani, Bartlett, and Niyogi, http://vikas.sindhwani.org/ieeespm.pdf
