I'd be interested in knowing of SIO has been used to cover earth sciences such as geology, hydrology, atmosphere, environmental science and related areas such as geography.

Some in the NSF EarthCube effort might like to develop it in this direction.

Current models are basically lists of names for variables such as "channel_cross_section_trapezoid__bottom_width" which need to be broken out into underlying concepts and some modest semantics added. Likewise units for their measurements need to be modeled with some semantics.

Hi Gary,
Although I haven't represented any earth science topics, I'd be happy to provide some insight into how SIO could be used to formulate complex expressions to describe certain types or relations.

"channel_cross_section_trapezoid__bottom_width"
equivalentTo
 sio:width
  and sio:is-measurement-value-of some 'channel_cross_section_trapezoid__bottom'

'channel_cross_section_trapezoid__bottom'
 equivalentTo
 'bottom'
 and sio:is-part-of some 'trapezoid'
and sio:is-attribute-of some 'channel cross section'

'channel cross section'
 equivalentTo
 'cross section'
 and sio:is-part-of some 'channel'

i don't have spatial terms like top, bottom, etc, but these could be easily added as per your requirements. i also don't have all geometric shapes, but some basic entities already there (http://semanticscience.org/resource/geometric-entity

of course, with more communication, it would be possible to more accurately capture things as per your definitions.

m.
