Christmas concerts at Grace Cathedral are a beloved San Francisco tradition. The magnificent music, gorgeous setting and astonishing acoustics make a wonderful way to ring in the season. Experience the deep connection between spirit and art at Grace Cathedral.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph was constructed in 1877 on the site of former basilicas that were damaged by earthquakes or fire. This 5th reincarnation is a California Historical Landmark, and welcomes visitors each year to witness the beauty of the church with it's majestic domes and 39 exquisite stained glass windows. If you're in search of a place to worship during your visit to San Jose, the basilica is a welcoming church and the annual free Season of Hope concert series celebrates the 12 Days before Christmas and offers nourishment for your spirit by presenting a soul-satisfying multicultural musical event for everyone to enjoy during the holiday season.
The cathedral series was not Monet's first series of paintings of a single subject, but it was his most exhaustive. The subject matter was a change, however, for prior to this series, Monet had painted mostly landscapes. The cathedral allowed him to highlight the paradox between a seemingly permanent, solid structure and the ever-changing light which constantly plays with our perception of it. There were calls for the state to buy the entire series and exhibit them as a whole, but these calls were not heeded and the series was divided.
Season tickets for the remaining concerts of the Masterworks Series presented by AARP Montana are available at a reduced rate. In addition to the substantial discounts on season tickets, subscribers also receive the Bring A Friend Pass, The Art of Listening Newsletter, and several other benefits. Single concert tickets can also be purchased online at www.helenasymphony.org, by calling the Symphony Box Office (406.442.1860), or visiting the Symphony Box Office located on the Walking Mall at the Placer Building (21 N. Last Chance Gulch, Suite 100) between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
A crew of Saint Ignatius High School students spent a couple of hours hauling boxes and decorations from the cathedral basement into the church so parish volunteers could assemble the trees, fluff them, hang wreaths inside and set up the historic crèche. Then the students returned the boxes and plastic storage tubs to their spots in the basement.
Focal points both inside and outside of the historic cathedral are creches. The outside crèche was created a few years ago by Kenny Misconish, director of maintenance and a talented woodworker. Father Ralph said Misconish built the large, wooden stable and he researched, then purchased appropriately sized statues.
Even after all the trees were placed around the sanctuary, near the main doors of the cathedral and in the naves, there was plenty of finishing work to do. Volunteers, some wearing protective gloves, fluffed up the trees to help them look more realistic. Thousands of tiny, white lights will brighten each tree throughout the Christmas season, which ends on Epiphany.
A mile-long auto road leads to the top of 700-foot Cathedral Ledge where views across the Saco River Valley to the White Mountains can be enjoyed. The park can be also be accessed from hiking trails at Echo Lake State Park. Once on the top, a new accessible hiking trail leads to a view of the valley. Both Cathedral and nearby White Horse ledges are popular rock and ice climbing walls.
