Hi Selenium Community,

I hope everyone is doing well!

I’ve been working in test automation for a while, primarily using Selenium with Java for UI testing. While Selenium has been a fantastic tool, I’ve recently been exploring Playwright and am intrigued by its capabilities, especially its ease of implementing both UI and API test automation within a single framework , also its inclusion with reporting and debugging features and like plug and play.

Key features like built-in support for handling API mocking, parallel execution, and its ability to work seamlessly across multiple browsers have caught my attention, including testing UI with different resolution and providing testing like in mobile device feel. The unified approach it offers for end-to-end testing seems quite appealing.

I’m curious to hear from this experienced community:

  • Have any of you transitioned from Selenium to Playwright? If yes, what has your experience been like?
  • Do you think Playwright’s ease of use and advanced features make it a strong contender to replace Selenium in modern automation projects?
  • Are there specific challenges or limitations in Playwright that we should be aware of before making the switch?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and insights!

Best regards,
Cyril John

Hi Cyril!

While I personally have very little experience with Playwright, I know it's currently catching the hype. :)

First of all, Selenium was never a testing tool - it's a browser manipulation tool.
For testing, it's recommended to use some testing library on top of Selenium, not just Selenium.
Since you write in Java, one popular option is Selenide.

And here we go: Selenide has all these "Playwrite advantages": reporting, debugging, plugins, mobile emulation - all you need for testing.
