Hi, everyone and saludos muy cordiales desde China! I've been seeing all the emails about Rubén's situation, and I want to thank everybody for the feedback. Your responses have been really useful in helping me understand the situation from afar more fully, and now Mauricio and I will take the next steps to see what else we might do to make it possible for Rubén to attend UWCCR.
One thing that is 100% clear in every message I've seen is that each of you cares deeply about doing the right thing for Rubén, and in that aspect, I think we are all on the same side of the argument. I applaud you for your efforts to make it possible for kids to attend UWC.
No matter how accurately the scholarship offer of 0 to 50% might have been presented to Rubén and his family, sometimes people just hear what they want to hear, and I understand that he may have thought he was being offered a place with a 50% scholarship. So, I don't think there is any blame in this case--just a lot of people (including Rubén and his family) who want him to be able to attend UWCCR.
As you also know, the College believes strongly in its commitment to fairness to ensure the continuity for future generations so that more kids are able to have a UWC experience. That means asking those who can pay to do so. We make the best decisions we can make in that regard given the financial info we receive from families. It is possible that in this instance, we didn't have enough information, so we will invite Rubén's family to meet with us and we will reconsider what we might be able to offer.
I want to thank Ivannia for asking everyone to give us some input, and I want to thank each of you who shared your perspective. As I mentioned at the beginning, this feedback was useful.
When we have more to share with you, I will let everyone know.
By the way, a potential donor and I met with one of our current UWCCR students in Beijing a few days ago, and our student was fantastic in talking about the way UWC has made a big change in his life. He was so natural in his way of speaking and enthusiastic about Costa Rica that it made me feel especially proud of the work we ALL do to make the UWC experience possible for kids. I want to focus on that as I close this message, because it is THAT which unites us all in this good work together. Again, thanks and all the best.
Here's to a good week.
John
