Dear all,

As a National Selection Committee we have done our best to select what we believe are exceptional Costa Rican youth to be part of a UWC, and we would not like to give up on any of them. We understand the financial situation of the school, but despite any misunderstanding from any of the involved sides in Ruben´s case, we would like to focus on looking for solutions and give it one more shot before closing this issue. We would like to propose the following two options:

1. Try to reach to other UWCs around the world and the IO to explain Ruben´s situation and search for the opportunity of another offer that Ruben and his family can afford;

2. Consider Ruben as a final candidate for next year's selection process,  awarding him one of the scholarships superior to 50% that the National Selection Committee will be offered next year.

These two options have been applied for very special cases in the past, and have proven to be successful. Our final commitment is always to provide these special students with the opportunity of an UWC experience. We hope that with the support of the UWC CR we can all continue to pursue that goal.

For any of the two options, Ruben's family will have to be contacted as soon as possible in order to explain this turn of events to them and see if they are willing to follow this option.

Under an ideal situation this should not happen, and it will have to be hardly tackle during our Selection Process Evaluation meeting.

Please let us know your thoughts.

Best Regards,

Erick

Hi, everyone, and thanks, Erick, for your message. I've been on vacation in the US this past week, so my apologies for not being as quick with the email response as usual.

1. I am in the process of checking to see what places might still be available at other UWCs via the IO. It seems there is one possibility and I will let you know if that becomes a viable option.  Of course, if there is a place available, we will let Rubén's family know the details first.  I have been in contact with Rubén about this, and he seems very interested.

2. At this point, I am afraid I cannot support the idea of giving Rubén a scholarship next year.  Given Ruben's family's ability to pay, his offer from us next year would not be any different from his offer this year, and more UWCs will be considering financial need next year.  To award a scholarship from another college to a student whose family can afford to contribute means taking a place from another student who might not otherwise be able to attend a UWC.  Part of the task of the Selection Committee is to match up the selected students to the offers, and you have already done that with Rubén.  The only way I would support the idea would be if the Selection Committee were to receive an offer that matched what we've already determined the family could pay.

I hope we can make something work for Rubén; he seems like a great kid.  All the best to each of you and thanks again for the work that we do together.

John

John,

Can you explain point #2 again? I got confused about your argument of whether or not granting a scholarship to Ruben next year. Please clarify the difference between granting a scholarship to UWCCR at 50% and a scholarship to any other college ...

Thanks and Regards,

Javier

Thank you John,

Regarding point two, you said that "what we have already determined what the family could pay". I think this is a crucial point we will need to discuss during the selection process evaluation meeting we will hopefully have next month. I consider it a little inappropriate for any of us to determine what a certain family can afford without considering the own family´s opinion and arguments into the determination.

We can talk more about this later. Enjoy your break and see you next month.

Best Regards.

Erick

Just to update everyone--it looks as though MUWCI will offer a partial scholarship to Rubén, and he and his family are very excited.  Nothing has been finalized yet, so please don't get too excited, but once everything is worked out, we'll let you all know.

Thanks again for all the combined efforts.
John

Thank you John,

That means that we are still waiting for his official acceptance of the offer?
