The film Angulimal (1960) was not directly based on the life of Buddha, but on the life of a dacoit and killer who used to loot and kill innocent people and cut off their fingers and who made a garland of such fingers to wear around his neck, thus he got the name Angulimal (Angluli: finger, mala: garland). The film depicts an incident where the dreaded dacoit once met the Buddha when Buddha was passing by a forest and goes ahead to kill him, but was corrected by the compassion of Buddha.

The fifth film about Buddha was a Japanese one, Shaka, produced by Kenji Misumi in 1961. It was shown in the US in 1963 under the title Buddha. On February 13, 1964, a Korean film about the life of the Buddha had its premiere, Seokgamoni, the Korean translation of the Sanskrit Shakyamuni, which in Mahayana Buddhism is the term for the historical Buddha.

In 1997 the Indian producer G.A. Sheshagiri Rao made a Buddha film. It was simply entitled Buddha. This one did not roll in cinemas, but it was only sold on DVD. This one is also the longest movie about Buddha, as it consists of five DVDs with approximately 180 minutes film each.

In 2008, K. Raja Sekhar produced another Buddha film entitled Tathagata Buddha. The original film was in Telugu, but later it was dubbed in Hindi. This film relates Buddha's life story until its end, his parinirvana. The film is available on DVD.

It is known that Buddhists in countries like Sri Lanka and Burma abhor the very idea of any human being impersonating the Buddha in a film.[1] After its release in 1925 The Light of Asia was banned in Sri Lanka and the Malay States (contemporary West Malaysia).[2]

Starring by Gagan Malik, Anchal Singh, Ranjan Ramanayake, Anjani Perera, Roshan Ranawana, Gautam Gulati, Saranga Disasekara, Dilhani Ekanayake, and Wilson Gooneratne.[2][3] Veteran film maker Chandran Rutnam was the main adviser to the project.[3][4][5][6] The film was released in Sri Lanka on 24 January 2013 on EAP theaters.[7] The film has been dubbed into many languages such as in Mandarin, Thai, Vietnamese and Hindi. It has also been subtitled in French, Japanese, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Hindi.[8]

The film received five of the eight awards presented at 2014 UN Vesak Buddhist Film festival in Hanoi, Vietnam including the Best Featured film, Best Actor award, Best Director award, Best Editor award and Best Music award.[9]

Given the internationally diverse star studded cast and direction, the film utilizes elaborate sets, exquisite locations within Sri Lanka and an authentic script approved by the supreme council of the Maha Sangha.

An epic film based on the life story of Prince Siddhartha, from his birth up to his enlightenment, is played by an international cast including Gagan Malik(India), Anchal Singh(India), Anjani Perera(USA), Gautam Gulati (India) and many Sri Lankan stars like Ranjan Ramanayake, Roshan Ranawana, Saranga Disasekara, Dilhani Perera, and Wilson Gooneratne.

A project of The Light of Asia Foundation of Sri Lanka, the movie is produced by Navin Guneratne chairman of the Light of Asia Foundation and Jeff Goonewardena. The film is directed by Saman Weeraman and internationally renowned film maker Chandran Rutnam played a crucial role for its success.
Starting with Prince Siddhartha leaving all his luxuries and possessions as well as his new born son and loving wife, it unfolds over his unknown journey of finding the end to human sorrow and suffering.

The team of consultants to the production of the film included renowned Buddhist prelates including Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera and Kalashuri Edwin Ariyadasa, Chandran Rutnam and Prof. Nimal de Silva.

Indian Actor Gagan Malik who will play the role of the Buddha in the new film too, spoke about the impact of the previous one on his life. He said playing the character of Prince Siddhartha prompted him to explore and study the experience of ordainment which inspired him to become a monk in Thailand for 99 days, observing the rules and lifestyle of Buddhist ordained monks. This learning experience would therefore also influence his work in the new film.

Malik said playing the role of the Buddha in the new film is more than a mere accomplishment of his career, it is about providing a good portrayal of the character and suitable presentation of the work and motivations of the religious figure.

The producers of the film said they aimed to work with 30 investors from the corporate world of Sri Lanka. Organisations or individuals interested in investing may contact the founder or the project manager on the numbers 0777352628 and 0772068774 respectively.

From watching the first ten minutes of Little Buddha, it becomes evident that the director chose an opposition of two color schemes to designate the regions of the world where the events took place. For the Eastern world, the color palette is warm, with red, orange, and brown dominating imagery. For the Western world, the colors are cool and muted. The warm colors were also associated with the religion of Buddhism and the positive perspective it was given in the film.

In order to explore how Buddhism was depicted in the film, several aspects of the story should be discussed. First, the key storyline is directly related to Buddhism. As Lama Norby, a monk from Tibet discovers that there was a boy in Seattle who could be reincarnated from Lama Dorje, he flies to the USA to deliver the news to the boy and his family. To teach the boy about Buddhism, the monk gives him a book called Little Buddha, which explored the life and the enlightenment of Siddhartha Gautama. Very quickly, the boy gets caught up in the story of the enlightened man who lived twenty-five hundred years ago. The tale of Siddhartha Gautama is fascinating because it reflects the imaginative nature of Buddhism as a whole: during the birth of Siddhartha, a tree supported his mother, when the boy started making his first steps, lotus flowers bloomed underneath his feet. Despite belonging to a royal family, Siddhartha decided not to shelter himself from the pain and suffering of the world. After giving up everything that he owned, Siddhartha became an ascetic; however, he soon realized that reaching the enlightenment was only possible through finding a middle ground between the good and the bad in the world.

On March 18, 1925, the team of Rai, Osten, and Wirsching arrived in Bombay. They rushed into production in order to finish filming before the monsoon season began. On many shooting days, the temperature reached 131 degrees Fahrenheit. While directing one complicated scene, Osten collapsed from heat stroke, as did many other crew members throughout the filming. BiIly-club-wielding policemen, provided by the British-controlled government, helped keep the thousands of extras on the set and prevented them from seeking shade during takes.

Prem Sanyas proved a hit in Germany and London. Indian audiences, however, accustomed to fast-paced melodrama, rejected the film with its stately pace and poetic style. It was the first in a series of films Osten and Rai made together, including Shiraz (1928), a tale about the love story behind the building of the Taj Mahal.
