My daughter took her Segway to school with her in Ft. Wayne. We're
trying to figure out what to do about a flat tire. She hasn't found a
local shop that will deal with it. I guess they're afraid of hurting
those plastic rims. Unfortunately, being 1600 miles away, I can't
help.

Any suggestions or points of contact in Ft. Wayne would be greatly
appreciated. Even help with just removing the wheels would be great
because then she could bring them home with her at Thanksgiving.

Hi there,
I think your daughter's best bet would be to call Nora at the Segway
of Indiana Store. She's very helpful and informative.

Thanks,
Sal

P.S. Nora has already been to your daighter's blog, and would give her
some sage advice on Segway Gliding and taking care of her new ride.
Nora has been a segway glider for over three years and would also have
some contacts in Ft. Wayne. Frankly, Segwaychat is a great place to go
for information, but sometimes having a human resource is better than
always going online for help.

The wheels are sort of easy to remove. There is a single hex head screw right in the midlle of the hub from the outside. It is torked on (Can't remember the tork spec) so someone needs to hold the wheel pretty tightly to get it loose. Then once you do you need a rubber mallet to hit around on the wheel from the underside. I usually turn the wheel and hit it with the rubber mallet and it takes a little bit to get it loose. And of course you don't want to damage the plastic rim, that is always the concern.

Has she tried filling it with air to see if there is actually a leak. My tires slowly loose air over time and I simply have to keep them inflated to the proper pressure. If its a hole puncture, I would probably try a simple plug like you would use for a car tire. Getting them on and off the rim is a bit tricky again due to the fear of trying to avoid damaging the rims. I live in Kokomo but is still 1.5 hour drive from Fort Wayne.

Hi Everyone,

I did leave a couple of messages on your daughter’s blog but usually I don’t have a lot of time to keep up with blogs or segwaychat. I would definitely have her call me at the shop or email me at nmo...@segwayofindiana.com

I gave her pricing for a new wheel kit (at about seventy bucks less than she was thinking) and could definitely work with her to meet somewhere around muncie to do the wheel change myself. It really shouldn’t have to come to her bringing things back to the west coast while she’s on break. We’re the only dealer in the state and we are very willing to help. I also told her there are riders who live in Fort Wayne. One of them is the Allen County Commissioner and he’s just a great all around guy.

Segway says tire only sales are still in the pipeline, but until then you’re going to have to purchase an entire wheel kit or buy a bmx tire and find a bike shop willing to put it on for her.

nora

I actually just helped her take the wheel off this morning -- it will go home with her over Thanksgiving, and then I'll help her put it back on when she gets back to Fort Wayne.

Nora, thank you for the reply. A young lady in FW helped my daughter
remove the wheel and she brought it home with her at Thanksgiving.
The young lady promised to help put the wheel back on. I will pass
along your contact information. Thanks again. -- Rich (Modestio,

Thanks to Lynn, my daughter brought the wheel home. I'll have to ship
it back. I had a hair-pulling time. I wanted my daughter to observe
the repair so she could learn, but between her unavailability and my
learning curve, I didn't fixed the leak in a timely manner. I have
some lessons that seem worth sharing, however.

- No apparent foreign object damage: The wear pattern around the
hole indicates that the tube was pinched between the tire and the
rim. That indicates something else to check for when re-assembling
the wheel.

- I found that over-tightening the valve core can break it and it's a
bear to extract.

- I also learned that glue-less tube patches may be fine in a pinch,
but soapy water dissolves the adhesive.

- With a little practice, getting the wheel off the rim became easy.
The trick is to pry with the plastic tire tool at the same time as
you're squeezing the tire so it fits into the groove in the rim.

- I still haven't figured out how to push the last bit of the tire
back onto the rim, except by inflating the tube. (No more soapy
water, thank you; next time, I'm using silicone lubricant spray.)

After I'd bought all kinds of tools, including a torque wrench, my
daughter left it all behind. Made her suitcase too heavy. Oh, well.

Anyhow, thanks to the gang for the encouragement and especially to
Lynn for her help..
