It is now 4:32 PM afternoon here in Dhaka,Bangladesh, Asia.
Weather condition is fine with sunny-cloudy sky.
Dear Prof. Dr Jahangir Alam > Director,
Earthquake Engineering Research Center, Chittagong
University of Engineering & Technology, Chittagong,
Bangladesh, Asia :
This refers to my mobile phone conversations with you, thanks for alerting me in the early morning hour.
There is a delay in sending information because I was criss crossing over teleseismic data released by ASC after due proceesing of the same received from the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Geo Forschungs Zentrum of Germany.
Mb 4.7 earthquake struck Chittagong Hill Tracts around six minutes past midnight having epicenter at 4.6 kms W of Dalcharimukh (Chittagong) and 71.9 kms ENE of Chittagong city. Duration was approximately for about five to six seconds when most of the people were sleeping but awakened by seismic jolts.
Morphological change is expected affecting hills and rivers within the epicenteral area. There may also be landslides during rainy season as cracks may have developed in the hills.
Sleeper awakened shows an intensity of IV MMIS in Chittagong city about 72 kms from the epicenter which may amplify or de-amplify on the basis of soil condition from place to place.
No report of liquefaction so far and no report of risky seiches in the area. Please note that 1950 Assam Earthquake 8.6 RS triggered seiches in Noakhali, Barisal & Khulna flooding a vast area for about four to five days so in this context my opinion is that a Seiche Zonation Map be drawn for the benefit of all concerned.
Till now no damage report has been received from the area affected but people were panic stricken.
Earthquake technical data subject to further verification is given below which will help you to conduct a SHARP SURVEY.
