I am a structural engineer practicing at madurai, Tamilnadu. Madurai is in seismic zone II as per IS 1893.
Is there any act or code provisions to insist go for compulsory seismic design with respect to height or hieght/widh ratio?
And is there any act or code provision to compulsory seismic design for apartment buildings?
Please give guidance on the above matter.

Thank you

I suggest you should read and follow IS1893 which clearly spells out the seismic zoning as well as applicable base shear to be used for designing buildings in each zone.It will be better if you ask specific questions after you have familiarised yourself with the provisions of this code.
