Dear all,
i have a querry regarding minimum bearing for supporting 8m span beam.
this is case of a school building in which existing structure is havinfg column at 4m centre to centre. Now the school management wants to make a hall of 8m at FF by terminating this central column .but the orientation of column is such that 200mm depth is available along beam.will it do?
thx

Dear Madsud
Other than the bearing, what you should be worried about is whether the beam and columns have enough size and reinforcement to cater to the increased span.

Change from 4m to 8m span

Check the column footing for increased vertical load
in respect of reinfocement and soil bearing pressures

Check the ground floor column with due consideration to
slenderness moments in column

Try to provide a deeper beam than required for span of 8.0m
sothat end moments are very very small and treat the beam as
simply supported for mid span moments

EQ moments have to be taken by column howsoever slender it may be and check
the reinf already provided in column

200mm column is very slender but normally beams rest on 200 thick
rcc walls with 200mm dim in line with spans of that order.

regards

vikramjeet

Removal of a column is an exercise fraught with danger. Check soil stresses, demands and capacities of (1) fdn footings, (2) columns, (3) beams, and (4) slabs.

Best of luck,
Indrajit Barua.
