Are there any plans to offer the Tanakh in addition to Hebrew / English also in Hebrew / German?
I'd love to see it ... and: Can I assist somehow if it needs to be developed from scratch?

Hello Thomas and Chajm - 

I'm sorry that the German translations haven't gotten the attention that you would have wanted.  I can only plead that our small team is quite busy, and this hasn't been our focus.  We do plan to expand our German offerings in the coming years, but I can't tell you an exact timeline.

If you haven't already seen, I'd like to draw your attention to this: https://github.com/Sefaria/Sefaria-Project/wiki/Adding-Non-English-Translations
It's a short page describing how to add non-English translations to the site.  The process reveals our English-centric roots, but once up there, versions will appear correctly, under their own language.  Our French and Yiddish Tanakh translations are good examples. 

If there is a technically oriented German speaking volunteer who wants to work on brining in some of these texts, we'd be happy to coach them along in the process.

All I got was a mail with a description of the thing I mentioned in my own mail and the rough plan to insert a German translation in the future. This is why a published an online Torah in German on my own ;-) 

Please don't misunderstand my point - I like and support the project and highly appreciate it, but of course, people have to focus on certain topics. So there are some special interest topics (like German translations) which have to be solved in other ways.

Yes - I looked at our earlier thread before responding.

To provide some context, we have a queue of many hundreds of texts that we're working through.  

There are a few stages that we go through when adding a text.  
1) Identify the best available version.  This often requires some legal work, given that we need texts to be free of copyright.  
2) Digitize - sometimes there's a digital copy available, often not. 
3) Parse and load into Sefaria's database

Volunteers can help at any stage. 
With those three stages taken care of, we can host any text. 

Regarding a German Tanakh, I'm still stuck at stage 1.  Is there an acceptable public domain version?  It would need to have been published in the early 1900s or before, or else explicitly be released into the commons.

To avoid any misunderstandings : It’s not about any texts, it’s about the entire Tanakh in German.
Just like https://www.sefaria.org/Genesis.1?lang=bi&aliyot=0 , there should be a bilingual Hebrew <-> German Tanakh.

 

The question is whether you can create an interface (API ?) to an online Tanakh ?

I’m not familiar with Github.

The Buber-Rosenzweig translation is available here: http://www.obohu.cz/bible/index.php?k=Gn&kap=1&styl=BRU#

We didn't yet conduct any due-diligence vis-a-vis copyright status. In the event we discover the Buber-Rosenzweig edition is indeed public domain, we can skip straight to the 3rd stage...

Thanks for the info.

I'm assuming that the bible site linked above has licensed the text. Sefaria may look into doing the same in the future. Otherwise, we can defer to Buber's words in waiting out the lifetime of the copyright:

  Siebzehn Jahre später sagte Buber, dass vielleicht keine 70 Jahre vergehen müssten, bevor ein deutsches Publikum wieder an der »Verdeutschung der Schrift« Interesse haben würde.

nope – the use of this translation is clearly illegal. I was in contact with the publisher. It will be public domain from 2035 on… the other Jewish translation on this page is also a violation of current copyright law.
