Molotov Theatre Group’s Inaugural “Disturbatory” Class to Present
Terminal Scenes
Country’s Second Oldest Grand Guignol Theater Company Spreads Its
Warped Perspective on Acting

Washington, DC (April 7) Spring is in the air, and what better way to
celebrate than by watching Molotov Theatre Group’s Disturbatory
graduates smash, bash, and burn each other after six hard weeks of
“honing their craft.”

The performance is this Saturday, April 11 at 5:00PM at 1409 Playbill
Café (1409 14th Street NW, Washington, DC). It plays for one
performance only and is an informal opportunity for interested and/or
sick individuals to see some of their favorite local actors testing
the murky waters of Grand Guignol. It is a pay-what-you-can
performance. Tickets will be available at the door of the theater.

The crash-course intro to Grand Guignol, taught by Molotov Theatre
Group founding members Tara Garwood, Lucas Maloney, and Alex
Zavistovich, focused on three categories: Acting Grand Guignol, Gore,
and Brawling. After lectures and exercises in those areas, students
used their new bag of tricks to create the Grand Guignol-spiked scenes
to be seen on Saturday.

“For a pretty slack bunch, I think we really impressed a lot on the
class,” said Zavistovich. “Whether that impression came from new
information or from repeated slaps in the face, I don’t know. Either
way, there’s some pretty twisted stuff going on in those scenes, so I
guess it worked. That’s why we’re great.”

Molotov plans to offer similar introductory classes in the future, and
also develop more complicated, upper-level offerings. Their next stage
production will be a remount of their critically acclaimed Closet Land
in the Capital Fringe Festival in July. Molotov is hoping to defend
the “Best Overall Show” title, won by their 2008 Capital Fringe
Festival production of The Sticking Place.

About Molotov Theatre Group

Founded in 2007, The Molotov Theatre Group is dedicated to preserving
and exploring the aesthetic of the Grand Guignol, or French Theater of
Horror. The Group will strive to accomplish this in two ways:
1) Through its ongoing project, “Grand Guignol DC,” to produce English
translations of original Grand Guignol scripts to preserve and draw
attention to this important, and essentially forgotten genre; and
2) To apply ideal from the Grand Guignol to contemporary and classic
works. The Molotov Theatre Group will pursue these goals following
the Grand Guignol models of employing a resident company of artists
and working towards building a true rotating repertoire of plays. To
our knowledge, no other company in the world is working to maintain
this genre in such a traditional way. For more information, visit
