There Is No Day Like Your Day, Oh Hussain!
This month is a month of remembrance. A month of commemoration.
On November 11th, commonly known as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day, the world honours the men and women who lost their lives in World War One. As the clock strikes 11:00 am on the 11th day of the 11th month, silence will fall upon offices, classrooms, lecture theaters and many other places of public gathering across the world as a mark of respect for the sacrifices of those brave souls.
For some, the moment will have only fleeting meaning. Others, during this moment of silence, will proudly think of great grandfathers and grandmothers, whom they may never have met, but whose tales of courage have been passed down through the generations.
It will be a solemn moment. But with the passage of time, some 100 years or so, the sorrow felt and hurt experienced will usually be relatively distant. The old adage comes to mind: “Time heals all wounds”.
But time is a liar when it comes to Hussain...
In this month, people around the world will also be remembering a small group of individuals who sacrificed their lives for truth and justice. It was in this month and on this day, some 1400 years ago, that Hussain stood up alongside his family and companions on the scorching sands of Karbala (modern day Iraq) against an oppressive and tyrannical ruler.
They stood for truth. They stood for honour. Most importantly, they stood for what was right, despite what harm came their way. They would not bow to evil and cruelty. Outnumbered, Hussain and his small band of followers were brutally slaughtered and their women and children taken as captives.
The remembrance of this sacrifice is unique. This commemoration stands apart, because those that remember Hussain grieve and mourn as if this tragedy took place today, right in front of their eyes. Men, women and children alike can be seen weeping and sobbing the world over, lamenting the loss of Hussain.
It truly is, in every sense, a phenomenon that defies time. By every logical or rational standard, the grief and sorrow of Hussain’s martyrdom should subside, yet year after year, this flame continues to burn and intensify.
Hussain may have been slain – but it is our duty to ensure his principles live on. To ensure that no oppressor remains unchallenged; no tyrant can sit on his throne, brazen and unimpeded. Hussain taught us that inequality has no place in human civilisation, and that kindness and compassion must be our moral compasses.
This November, let us all pledge to take something away from this timeless message. We can all implement something from the legacy of Hussain and make our societies that much freer, equal and considerate. Take a moment and remember Hussain.

In Action!
Our ambassadors continued their noble efforts in October. In Michigan, they cooked and provided food for the homeless while in Sweden (Malmo) the team held a blood donation drive, with the initiative featuring in the local news. A huge well done to our teams across the globe for spreading the noble message of Hussain. Click here to see more of WiH In Action.
