Hello Michael, Well, we knew this was going to happen. We knew the swiftboating would come from the rightwing. And I mentioned last week that we'd be hearing a lot more about Ayers from the Republicans in the days ahead. That's why we started this website, and that's why you joined us. And now it's on. A rightwing billionaire - one of the top funders of the attacks in 2004 - has funded an attack ad so sleazy, so reprehensible that even Fox News refuses to air it. It's the lowest of the low, a disgusting assault not just on Barack Obama, but on all of us who believe in honesty and decency in public life. We need to fight this right now. Not only is he going back on his promise to condemn and work against these kinds of smears from outside groups, but he's actually, incredibly, piling on and echoing the smears in his own campaign press releases! Not even George W. Bush sank this low into the gutter. John McCain is in league with this smear group to push the most ridiculous lies. They are dragging up the long-discredited smears about some guy named William Ayers, a man with no real connection to Barack Obama beyond living in the same general area of Chicago. Barack's hometown newspaper months ago called these attacks a "phony charge," and the McCain camp knows it. But instead of trying to debate how to get this country ready for the 21st century, they drag out the divisions of the 1960s to try to distract us. Maybe they think this is the only way they can win, but we can't let this pass. The Barack Obama campaign has launched a strong assault against the ad, pushing hard to make sure that everyone knows it's a lie and that stations that run it do so at the risk of their credibility. But we can push further. These politics won't end until the people who use them start to pay a price for dragging our discourse into the gutter.
