Michelle Obama's speech at the Democratic convention last night was nothing short of captivating. She showed once again that she is a model of strength and intelligence for women all over the country. Gone are the days of having a submissive, always-on-the-sidelines first lady. We saw similar qualities in former first ladies Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Clinton, both of whom were chided for "stepping out of line." These women and others like them paved the way for Michelle Obama, and she will certainly make the path a little easier for those who (we hope) follow her to the White House. But Michelle brings something different than Roosevelt or Clinton; she brings an ability to see the world through a lens at the intersection of gender and race. She alluded to this in her speech, which Adele Stan discusses in this week's top story.
We'll have a lot of other election stories in this issue of Reproductive Justice and Gender. Stay tuned for this and other great coverage as the convention unfolds.
