A Benefit for the Tibet fund |
|
Seattle: Tenzin Norzom has gathered a few of her good friends to share a piece of traditional Tibetan culture through an evening of food and music. They will hold the event, named Dreams for Tibet, at St. Stephen's
Episcopal Church in Seattle on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. All proceeds will go to The Tibet Fund for the preservation of Tibetan culture through children's education.
Tenzin's parents were born in Tibet, but followed the Dalai Lama to India in 1959 in order to avoid Chinese repression. Tenzin and her family now
live in Seattle and own Lhasa Handicrafts in the Roosevelt district. However, her desire to support Tibetan culture and its central message of compassion remains strong. Dreams for Tibet has grown out of that desire. It will directly benefit the Tibet Fund which is supporting a project to bring solar energy to a Tibetan school in Nepal where power outages can last up to 16 hours a day. The school, which has 475 students, provides education for Tibetans as well as other Nepalese minorities such as Sherpa children, and kids from Mustang.
The evening will begin with a chant led by Gina Salá, an internationally known artist who has lived in a Tibetan community in the Himalayas. Next, we will hear a Tibetan children's choir led by Mary K. McNeill, who
led the children's choir for Seeds of Compassion. Dinner will be traditional homemade Tibetan cuisine prepared by Tenzin, her family, and friends. Wine and beer will be available. After dinner, we will view a video about the Tibet Fund and a narrated slideshow presented by Derek Johnson, internationally recognized photographer. He recently spent time with a Tibetan refugee family in India. Our show will continue with special guests - Tibetan actor and musician, Tsering Dorjee, international recording artists Gary Stroutsos, and David Revelli - and will include traditional dancing, Tibetan folk songs, and songs of the natural world.
If this is not enough, there will also be a silent auction that will give guests a chance to bring home a piece of Tibetan culture. This special event will give our community a unique opportunity to support, taste, see,
and feel Tibet right here in our city. Space is limited and reservations are highly recommended.
