At Maryland Physics, students enjoy both the benefits of a large research university and the supportive environment of a close-knit department. More than 75 renowned faculty and 35 research groups open the doors to discovery. The Office of Student and Education Services provides assistance to students from pre-admission through graduation. This includes recruitment, admissions, registration, financial aid, scholarship information, event coordination, and other programs that address the needs of our physics students. The office also supports instructional staff.


The staff cares about every physics student's well-being and is committed to a mission that encourages and supports academic, career, and personal goals. The office invites students to visit and is ready to help each student prepare for future roles in a diverse, dynamic, and global society.


As an average physics student, you have a wide range of career options to choose from. You can pursue a career in research, teaching, engineering, data analysis, or even finance. It all depends on your interests and strengths.


To improve your skills as an average physics student, you can attend workshops, conferences, and seminars related to your field of interest. You can also join study groups and participate in hands-on experiments to gain practical knowledge. Additionally, reading books and articles on physics can also enhance your understanding and skills.


There are many top universities around the world that offer excellent programs for physics students. Some of the best universities for an average physics student include Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and University of California, Berkeley.


Staying motivated as an average physics student can be challenging, but there are a few things you can do to keep yourself motivated. Set achievable goals, surround yourself with like-minded individuals, and take breaks when needed. Also, remember why you chose to study physics in the first place and focus on your passion for the subject.


To excel as an average physics student, it is essential to have a strong foundation in the basics of physics. Make sure to attend all your classes, take thorough notes, and ask questions when you don't understand something. Additionally, try to solve as many practice problems as possible and seek help from your professors or tutors when needed.


The Ohio State University offers nearly a thousand students organizations. The Department of Physics is home to three of these organizations and are open to undergraduate physics and engineering physics majors and anyone interested in the group's mission. We encourage our majors to get involved in at least one of the following organizations.


The purpose of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) is to promote the development of physics students through interactions with fellow students, faculty, and visiting physicists. Meetings are held every other week and consist of talks from faculty to outside speakers on diverse topics in physics, and lab tours. Visit the SPS Website for additional information.


Sigma Pi Sigma exists to honor outstanding scholarship in physics, to encourage interest in physics among all students, to promote an attitude of service of its members toward their fellow students, colleagues, and the public, and to provide a fellowship of persons who have excelled in physics. The main activities of the society involve outreach projects to enhance the teaching of science in middle and high schools in Ohio. More information is available on the Sigma Pi Sigma website.


The purpose of WAGMiP is to promote involvement of, career and academic development for, and sense of community among the graduate and undergraduate women and gender minorities in the Ohio State University Department of Physics, and to increase awareness of issues related to these groups in physics among members of the physics community at the Ohio State University. Polaris is a partnership between undergraduate and graduate physics and astronomy students at The Ohio State University dedicated to fostering a more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible undergraduate physics experience in the OSU Departments of Physics and Astronomy. We are a student-run organization developed in collaboration between graduates and undergraduates. Our focus lies in the augmented retention of underrepresented and non-traditional groups in the physics and astronomy bachelors of science programs by providing professional and academic mentorship for those groups. A. Their cumulative grade point average (GPA) is at least 3.0 in the courses taken at FSU after their admission to graduate school. The following courses are not included in the GPA: courses numbered less than 5000, courses for which S/U grading is used, and transfer courses. A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below 3.0 at the end of a semester will be placed on academic probation. If a student's grade point average remains below 3.0 for two consecutive semesters, they will be academically dismissed. A Major Professor or the Graduate Affairs Director may petition the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Dean of the Graduate School for a probationary readmission.


C. The graduate student meets the requirement at point B by repeating one core course and replacing that course's grade, as long as this is completed before the end of their second year in the program.


13. PROGRAM OF STUDIESAt least one month before taking the oral portion of the Preliminary Exam, the student should submit to their Major Professor a Program of Studies, that is, a complete plan of courses taken and to be taken. Forms for listing these courses are available in the Graduate Studies Office of the Physics Department. A student's Program of Studies must be approved and signed by each member of the student's committee, and by the chairman of the Physics Department. The student should keep one copy of his or her program of studies, provide his or her Major Professor with one copy, and see that a signed copy is placed in his or her file in the Graduate Studies Office.


13.2.4. Grade. Thesis degree. At the conclusion of the oral exam the student will be asked to step out of the room and the Supervisory Committee will discuss and evaluate their performance. The student will then be recalled and informed whether or not their thesis and the defense of the thesis were satisfactory. The Supervisory Committee may at this time also indicate if further changes should be made in the thesis.


13.2.5. Certification of Results. The certification of the results are handled by the Manuscript Clearance Online Portal (see these instructions). You may ask the Graduate Affairs Office for help in setting up clearance for your thesis. After the defense of the thesis is completed and passed, the student will submit a final, edited manuscript to the Manuscript Clearance Portal. Then the Supervisory Committee members will receive an email requesting a signature on the Manuscript Signature Form. The student must then obtain University approval of their thesis as discussed in Section 13.2.8.


13.2.6.2. FSU Abstract. In addition to the above abstract which forms an integral part of the thesis, a second independent abstract limited to 250 words must be submitted to the University Graduate Office for use by Florida State University. If the Thesis Abstract is 250 words or less in length, then with appropriate reformatting, it may be used for the FSU Abstract.


For students who have not yet passed the oral part of their Preliminary Exam ("prospectus defense"), only the student's faculty advisor or research supervisor if they have one will be required to sign the form.
