DisplayLink (formerly Newnham Research) is a semiconductor and software technology company owned by Synaptics that develops the DisplayLink USB graphics technology. This technology enables computers and displays to connect using USB, Ethernet, and WiFi, and also allows for multiple displays to be connected to a single computer. DisplayLink's primary customers include notebook OEMs, LCD monitor manufacturers, and PC accessory vendors, and their technology is compatible with a wide range of operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, macOS, Android, ChromeOS, and Linux.[1]

DisplayLink launched its first semiconductor product family, the DL-120 and DL-160 USB 2.0 graphics devices, in January 2007,[8] signalling a change in the company's business plan from FPGA-based systems to semiconductors. The DL-120 and DL-160 allow up to six additional monitors to be added to a PC through USB 2.0.

In May 2009, DisplayLink launched its second semiconductor product family, the DL-125, DL-165, and DL-195 USB 2.0 graphics devices. This DL-1x5 family brought improved performance, an increase in maximum resolution to 2048x1152, and the integration of a DVI transmitter and video DAC. The first products to ship with the new DL-1x5 chips were the Samsung Lapfit LD190G and LD220G monitors.[9]

On November 17, 2009, DisplayLink announced their first Thin Client product based on their USB 2.0 virtual graphics technology, designed for Microsoft Windows MultiPoint Server.[10] Thin client manufacturer HP was the first to announce a product based on DisplayLink USB Graphics technology with the launch of the t100 Thin Client.[11]

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2012, DisplayLink announced several products incorporating video and graphics over a USB 3.0 "SuperSpeed USB" connection, showing substantial improvements in performance, resolution support, and video quality.[12]

The DisplayLink VGC software is based on a proprietary adaptive graphics technology. The VGC software runs on a Windows, macOS, or Linux host PC and takes information from the graphics adapter and compresses the changes to the display from the last update and sends it over any standard network including USB, Wireless USB, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi.

While the basic network graphics technology can be used on a variety of network interfaces (Ethernet, and Wi-Fi), DisplayLink has to date only designed products around USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and Wireless USB connectivity.[17]

DisplayLink drivers are available for OS X 10.8 and later but newer DisplayLink chipsets require newer versions of the driver, which in turn require more recent macOS versions.[31]DisplayLink confirmed that macOS version 10.13.4 through 10.13.6 broke compatibility with their driver. DisplayLink is supported on macOS 10.14.macOS 10.13.4 introduced support for external graphics processors also known as eGPUs.[32]

Here you can download drivers for DisplayLink USB graphics chipsets incorporated in your dock, adapter or monitor. We recommend to update to the latest driver to address any potential security issue, fix bugs, improve performance and add new features.

Almost everyday my phone heats up randomly and especially while I'm playing games and then switches off. Sometimes it doesn't heat up but just goes off. When I switch it on "Displaylink graphics is running" notification appears.

I have an issue with, I presume, displaylink drivers or maybe graphics drivers. I am currently running Linux mint 20 cinamon edition on my XMG Neo 17 (E21) and I have usb C docking station with two display outputs with two external monitors hooked to those ports. the problem I am having is that if I boot the computer with monitors plugged to the docking station and docking station to laptop it hangs on black screen (right before desktop should normally be shown). If I boot the computer without the docking station or with docking station and without external monitors it boots fine, then if I plugin monitors also works fine. The problem then is that when I try to disconnect docking station the computer hands at the screen it was before I unplugged the computer. Also if I have monitors connected and try to shutdown the computer it also hangs.

I have already tried a few different distros (ubuntu, kubuntu, neon, Pop OS!) but the issue was present on all of them. I also tried few different drivers... For the display link I am using these drivers (version 5.4.1): -graphics/downloads/ubuntu and for the graphics card driver I tried few different versions (4.60, 4.70, 4.95 beta and now running on 4.95). If I install opensource drivers for graphics card everything seems to work fine but the performance is ... well, less than ideal.

Sorry for the unclear formulation. I mean, I can install the patched version, the command hyprctl monitor correctly list both e-DP1 and DVI-I-1 (displaylink screen), and it says hyprland has attributed workspace 2 to the displaylink screen. But, the screen stays black, exactly like for i3 prior to the activation of the screen using arandr.

Technology
The DisplayLink network graphics technology is composed of Virtual Graphics Card (VGC) software that is installed on a PC and a Hardware Rendering Engine (HRE) embedded or connected to a display device. After receiving the data, the HRE then transforms it back into pixels to be displayed on the monitor. While the basic network graphics technology can be used on a variety of network interfaces (Ethernet, and Wi-Fi), DisplayLink has to date only designed products around USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and Wireless USB connectivity.[17]

2021 April 22 - We have verified that the Intel Iris Xe Graphics Driver version 27.20.100.9466 is incompatible with DisplayLink 4K graphics adapters used in many of our docking stations and graphics adapters.

I noticed you want to install the latest version of this software, however Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB is intend for those computers who will not have frequent update or changes. I have downloaded the latest Displaylink USB graphics software released version note and found it support system version Windows 10 version 1607 and upper. But Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB have same system build with Windows 10 version 1507 which is previous than that software requirement.

The above docking station has a driver for Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 22.04 ( -graphics/downloads/ubuntu). Has anybody tested this driver for Leap by any chance? Are there drivers available somewhere else? Thanks!

Solving that issue isn't easy. Some notebooks include a second display output you can use when there's another monitor available. And we've seen a handful of laptops with AMD-based GPUs that expose Eyefinity functionality, accommodating a third screen. But there aren't many of those around. So, how do you get the flexibility to connect three of four displays at a time? DisplayLink has a solution in its technology that enables graphics over the USB bus, connecting to monitors with USB inputs.

I use a StarTech dual monitor docking station (connected to two laptops so that I can hot-swap). The StarTech uses the universal DisplayLink graphics driver to achieve this and it works fine with my HP Spectre x360 and with a Dell Vostro.

However, I just purchased a HP Pavilion 14-cexxx notebook with the latest core i7 processor and the docking station will not work with it. It will display two screen OK but it constantly freezes (every couple of seconds!) and will not run ANY graphics based software. Anyone else having this problem?

Update to the Post, below. the problem has been SOLVED! However, not by HP. Into my third month now with HP support and still nothing, so I force-installed an update to the Intel Iris Graphics driver and EVERYTHING WORKS PERFECTLY! I installed the new drivers, tested the laptop thoroughly in stand-alone mode, then switched over to dual monitor mode. Everything is working perfectly! I have been using it intensively with heavy graphics programs and there are no problems whatsoever: no lags, no freezes, no hiccups! It just works. ... and NO CONFLICT PROBLEMS with other drivers.

I thought that displaylink broke again, but it was just a faulty HDMI cable. All good - linux 6.6.2-arch1-1, displaylink 5.8-1, evdi-git 1.14.1.r2.ga943d98-1 (except for those 4 long hours I've wasted trying to diagnose this...)

Yep, it's working for me as well (evdi-git 1.14.1.r1.g495e8cf-1, displaylink 5.8-1, linux 6.6.1.arch1-1). Thank you very much!I've had to reenable the displaylink screen in the KDE display configuration dropdown (I was away without the second screen for a few days).

I am unable to get this to work properly on kernel 6.1.1, with evdi/evdi-git/evdi-compat-git. My display shows up and I can move a window to it with keyboard shortcuts, but as soon as i move my cursor to it, it disconnects and DisplayLinkMana core dumps. I am using a dell D6000 and Arch, latest of any evdi or displaylink

From this page you can download a driver for your DisplayLink enabled USB graphics device that is incorporated in your dock, adapter or monitor. This software provides support for the DisplayLink enabled video outputs. The audio and Ethernet support is provided by native macOS drivers from OS version 10.11.

This news item is coming a bit belated due to LinuxTag, but the DRM graphics driver pull went in last week for the Linux 3.5 kernel. The open-source kernel graphics driver changes this time around are absolutely huge, complete with three new KMS drivers.
