I studied using the SANS On Demand course and as you would expect, it is tailor made for that course as every question comes directly from the material, almost verbatim.

When you purchase the exam, it may come with practice exams. I highly recommend these above all else. It is the same format and timeframe as the GSEC. If you do well on those, you will do well on the final exam. The practice exam and final exam are all from the same application. I know the On Demand is pricey but if you can at least secure the official GIAC practice tests you will have a VERY valuable resource.

Good Luck!

I took the security essentials bootcamp and followed up that week-long class with the exam. It worked for me!

Same here. One thing to remember is, it is an open book exam.

Follow this link to the sans.org site and scroll down and you get the
cost for each class. For the GSEC class it is $4045.00 and that is
just the class not a car or hotel or airfare if you need it.

I will say this about the SANS GSEC class that I took, it was by far
the best training I have ever attended. It was my first time going to
a SANS event and I am going again this year.

Good Luck Christian!

Hi,
I have not taken excalt gsec but i have gone for gcih.

Most of the SANS exams are of open book.so, i recommend you prepare an index(topic vs whichbook vs which page) of various topics on your system. when ever you encounter a question abt specific topic, you quickly search for it(F3), instead of searching all the books. This reduces time.

Thnx,
Sekhar

This is an excellent idea, prepare an index with crucial and primary words. I don't know how are the exams for GSEC, but others GIAC Certifications ask an important numbers of questions about switchs and specific command lines in some tools (i.e. switch for scan UDP Ports with nmap, -sU.... etc) that for many people is so difficult to learn...
