We be deploying SO in our VMware environment shortly and if I'm going to do this than there is no reason not to add Network Monitoring so I can see the health and get early warnings of potential problems as well.

I have no experience with Nagios or any of the others but I dont mind learning assuming its something that has staying power and could help a resume.

What do you guys suggest? Nagios, Zabbix, Zenoss Or Other?

Thanks.

FYI we are Windows environment with little linux such as SO and etc..

We use zabbix. It's awesome. The agent installs great on linux and
windows and you can script to do all sorts of different monitoring for
different things, do conditional alerting and even take actions based
on alerts. Very slick tool.

Hi

We are using Paessler PRTG Monitor for our environment. Easy and a nice web interface.

I second Zabbix. It is incredibly flexible, scalable and intuitive.
Honestly, it just works. We monitor over 200 servers and close to a
500 switches with it. As Jeremy says, it can do anything for you.

I like Cacti, it installs well even on the Security Onion distro, you can set up threshold alerts, downed device alerts, pdf reporting, of course the traffic graphs. Has lots of plugins, pretty easy to use all snmp based.
