Linux version for Security Onion installation...

Hi Doug:
Will either Kali Linux or Backtrack Linux work okay as the Linux OS platform for Security Onion?

The recommended version is the base Ubuntu 12.04 or it's derivatives (e.g, Xubuntu). Those are the only supported versions.

Kali and Backtrack are very customized for their own purposes, so you could run into some unintended consequences.

Hi Mark,

Our PPA and packages are designed for Ubuntu 12.04 derivatives. I
don't believe Kali or Backtrack are based on Ubuntu 12.04. You can
certainly try it, but we won't be able to support you if you run into
issues.
