Hello,

there is another alternative for DVD ISO image? I have an old Dell PowerEdge 2650 machine and it has only CD-ROM and Floppy drives.. so i can't see an option to install security-onion image..

Hi David,

Thanks for your interest in Security Onion!

Can the machine boot from USB? If so, you can create a bootable USB
drive from the Security Onion ISO image using a utility like
UNetbootin:
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Please let us know whether or not that helps.

Thanks,

No.. the machine can't boot with USB.. we already tried it.. (the bios don't have this option).. like I said.. it is an old Dell server machine..

We even tried using the Dell DRAC interface for installation, but the interface does not allow mapping DVD. And the motherboard has no IDE / SATA device, only 2 SCSI drivers. We tried plugging a USB/SATA cable but it was not possible to boot using it .. i don't have any more ideas...

Try the Plop boot manager. It comes as an iso that you burn to cd. Boot from the cd and then you should get a boot menu that in turn allows booting from USB. Hope that helps.

Plop did the job for us!! Thank you so very much for this post. We desperately needed to boot USB on a Dell 2650. This did the trick. Absolutely Wonderful!!!
