Scenario:
1. I have got Security Onion installed on ESX.
2. I launch the security onion through a vshphere client on my machine.
3. When I hit the 'console' tab in Vsphere client, after powering on the security onion VM, the Ubuntu box fires up with the screen asking for 'Username' and 'Password' (as usual).
4. I have a randomized password (obviously very difficult to remember) which was created initially and I want to change that password. (for logging into security onion ubuntu box).
Issues:
1. That password can't be copy-pasted in the Security onion VM, as it doesn't allow this function for entering password.
2. I need to change this password to something that I want to keep. How to do that?
3. I tried connecting to the security onion vm through ssh, since you can copy and right click (to paste the password) on the ssh shell. Got connected and changed the password with sudo and 'username passwd' command. Password changed successfully (as the message appear on the ssh shell).
4. I exit from the ssh shell and power up the security onion vm again in the vsphere client. Tried using the password which was successfully changed on the putty shell, but that doesn't work!! That simply means the password changed on putty doesn't replicate here.
So, I am stuck there at my original question. I have to change the password for logging on to security onion vm. How to do that?
p.s. This scenarios has nothing to do with password changing on ELSA, squert or any other utilities under security onion.
Kamal,
I am not sure why you would be experiencing this issue. Have you tried changing the password through a recovery console (local to the host) instead?
Thanks,
Wes
