I need to install Security Onion and Squid at a charity and have limited budget.
It looks like they can only afford one server but of reasonable spec (4 CPUS and 8GB Ram).
The traffic will not be high.

Would be the best configuration to use 3 NICS on a security Onion install

1 Nic is for Security Onion to monitor the network.

2 Nics for Squid to run as a gateway proxy with Squid and e2guardian.

There seems no reason to me why this would not work but there may be some hidden perils I am not aware of.

Thoughts please or improvements

Tim

Tim,

I don't see how this wouldn't work, as Security Onion only requires one interface for management and one interface for sniffing.

Your specifications seem reasonable for a low-traffic environment.  Keep in mind, you will need storage, and more RAM is always good (and both are cheap).

Thanks,
Wes
