The revelation comes as bosses at the chain revealed the top performing movies of the year so far were Peter Rabbit 2, A Quiet Place Part II and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It grossing just 49.4 million dollars (35.6 million).
But it was significantly down on the 103.6 million dollars (74.7 million) made by the biggest films in the first half of 2020, with movie studios holding back major releases until more clarity on the pandemic was known.
In the UK, Cineworld said the first six months of the year saw admissions hit just 2.6 million, down from 9.6 million in the same period in 2020, with box office sales down 61.9% to 30.2 million dollars (21.8 million), despite the hike in ticket prices.
Retail revenue from sales of popcorn and drinks also dropped 56.1% to 12.9 million dollars (9.3 million) although the average spend per customer was up 62%, suggesting hardcore fans were willing to spend more to get back in front of a big screen after so many lockdowns.
Julie Palmer, partner at insolvency expert Begbies Traynor, said continued restrictions and a lack of willing on the part of cinemagoers means that cinemas are lagging behind in the economic recovery and will have to start thinking of different ways to recover.
Cineworld is one of the most popular cinema chains in the UK. They have well-stocked food stands with delicious popcorn, snacks, fizzy drinks, candy, desserts. See the menu and all the Cineworld food prices below.
Traditionally, movie theatres around the world only make a small portion of their total profits from ticket sales. Management workers in some cinemas have even come forward saying the distributors of the movies, often owned by the studios that produce the movies, massively drive up costs for the end-cinema, sometimes taking up to 90% of the ticket sales revenue.
2.2 Alcohol and Food Policy: Neither alcohol nor hot food may be brought onto the premises. Only hot food bought on the premises may be consumed on the premises. Alcohol may only be purchased and consumed in Cineworld licensed bar areas or in licensed screens and licensing laws will be strictly enforced.
Along with the high Cineworld food prices, their popcorn also comes with a high-calorie cost. A small sweet popcorn (60g) is around 290 calories, with a large sweet popcorn (250g) coming with a huge 1180 calories.
In late 2012, Cineworld bought Picturehouse Cinemas, which added another 21 locations around the UK. More recently in December 2017, Cineworld took over management of all the Regal concessions by buying them out, the second-largest cinema chain in the US.
Innovation has been the aim of the game recently. New technologies such as 4DX, ScreenX, and SuperScreen (ceiling-high, wall-to-wall screens with dual 4K projectors) continuously bring back movie-goers to experience the latest and greatest cinema technology.

Cineworld Broad Street isn't just going to be screening a new slasher movie soon - it has slashed the cost of watching it from a seat that shakes , too. In a month-long campaign called 'March to the Movies', the admission fee for its premium IMAX and 4DX screens has been reduced to match the prices for standard formats on the cinema's other screens.
The 12-screen cinema was the first multiplex in the city to have an IMAX screen when it launched in October 2012 with the Bond movie, Skyfall. Four years later in October 2016, it launched what remains the city's only multi-sensory seat-shaking screen, called 4DX, with the regional premiere of Doctor Strange.
Now the cost of watching films in those two screens during the month of March is being reduced to the same level as the standard screens. Below is a list of all of the films you can see in either format.
IMAX offers superior sound and clarity of vision compared with standard screens. 4DX shows films in a screen where the seats move or sometimes jolt in tune with the action. Cinemagoers can also experience other sensory effects including changes of temperature, rain and feel puffs of wind if any shots are fired. No hot drinks are permitted and the screen comes with various health warnings re bad backs, pregnancy and so on.
Creed III (IMAX, 4DX) - Michael B Jordan returns as Adonis Creed (son of Apollo) and directs himself and Ant-Man star Jonathan Majors as a childhood friend and former boxing prodigy called Damian who has been in prison for years.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (IMAX, 4DX) - Keanu Reeves returns as the professional hitman and assassin who is being hunted by the High Table. The sequel to Chapter 3 - Parabellum is the first film in the series not to be have been written by Derek Kolstad who created the franchise.
Exclusive to Cineworld Birmingham Broad Street, premium formats (IMAX and 4DX) will be available for the price of a standard ticket throughout the month of March at no extra cost, with tickets from 9.99.
Cineworld was unable to provide a figure for how much average ticket prices increased by but it is believed that the hike is due to spending patterns as restrictions eased and the types of films that were released.

Cineworld has recently reviealled, once they reopen after the current lockdown, they will be changing the pricing plans for the Unlimited Card Members. This in effect is changing the card into a very Limited Card Membership.
It does not cost Cineworld anything more or less to show movies in one cinema over the other. I was never a fan of the older system having expensive London cinemas but I understand the living wage in London is more expensive and hoped they were paying their staff accordingly. Everywhere else has the same national minimum wage/national living wage and cannot see how Cineworld can justify the randomness of the different prices of their tier system.
I live in a Tier 2 area. Any cinema I am likely to visit will have the same charge, however if I take a brake somewhere else in the country I may be hit with a surprise extra charge to see a movie when I am already paying my monthly subscription. I have also read many examples of users online who have the option of two Cineworld cinemas which are different tiers. One may be showing the same movies as the others but have times that are better suited, well they'll now be penalised for using one.
