My talented and esteemed colleagues...

Here's the MacGyver challenge for the day ....

I'm exploring the possibility of playing mps audio files on a flash drive via an old cell phone (e.g. 8 year old LG, 5 year old Samsung).

They both have an outlet (round) for an earplug.

Is there any way to buy an adapter where I could connect part of that adapter to the ear hole in the cell phone and plug the flash drive into a USB port in the adapter?

I was able to recharge one LG phone but don't see any audio player program on it - ala VLC Media PLayer or Audacity to open.play an MP3. It did play a song on the phone so there is a "speaker."

Thank you!

Charles.

Can you post the model numbers for the phone?  It's usually under the battery on a sticker.

Usually Android phones use a microSD card, sometimes it's in the SIM card tray, other times it's a separate spot on the phone somewhere (under the battery, in the side under a flap, etc).

There isn't a way to adapt a headphone jack to USB unless it's designed to do that.

The flash drive is going to want to be plugged into the USB port on the phone (the charging port) through an adapter. The main question is whether the phone uses USB-C (charging cable still plugs in when you rotate it 180°) or USB B micro (cable only goes in one way).

If the former, I think any "USB-C to USB A" adapter product will work. If the latter, you want a "USB On-The-Go" adapter with a male USB B micro end and a female USB A end.

If you succeed, you should be able to access the contents of the flash drive in the file browser app on the phone, and open MP3 files from there to play them.

Howdy Charles!

If you just want to get songs onto the phone, you can use bluetooth to transfer the files.

If you'd like to do that, and need more space, maybe you can install a microSD card.  Sometimes, it is a slot at the edge of the phone.  Sometimes it is piggybacked on to the SIM card.

There may be a hidden player on the phone that can be used to play the file.  I haven't tried installing any software to an Android without the Play store.

Otherwise, it may be possible to install an alternative OS, such as PixelOS or LineageOS on the phone to get a working player.
