I have a student looking for a very wide drum sander/planer. He and his dad need to plane a table that is 48" wide. They are willing to travel but I don't even know where to start looking. Thanks for any advice!

We usually use the CNC router for anything larger than the planer (20"/520mm), the CNC router can cut a little over 5'x10' the only disadvantage is you need to sand the surface afterwards and it might take a couple hours to surface the whole thing.  The advantage though is you can flatten twisted material because you can shim the stock to whatever you want flattened.

That's a great suggestion Chris - I'm not sure how much post-work the family was hoping for but that might be there best option.

You could try Mark over at Madison Woodworkers Supply but I don't know if/how wide of a sander he has, otherwise he might know someone who does.

Mark hasn't had one for a while now. His old one is at my shop and it was only a 36.  Its for sale--any interest?

Try Capitol Hardwoods on Stoughton rd. Or Prairie Hardwoods in Sun Prairie.

A router sled is how I surface large surfaces. I made my own, but they can be purchased.
