My talented lsitmates,

I've had my clothes washer not lock the lid but the steps (below) used to work.

Whirlpool Cabrio Clothes Washer Model WTW5500X

4.8 CU In

CEE Tier 3 Rated

This is the washer we have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R69bwFxoZ14

Looked here ...

https://www.ifixit.com/Search?query=Whirlpool+Cabrio+Clothes+Washer+

These steps used to work but no more....

Whirlpool Cabrio Clothes Washer – Reset

From https://www.americanappliancerepair.com/appliance-faqs/how-do-i-reset-my-whirlpool-washing-machine/

1.    Turn the washer off.

2.    Set the mode selector dial to NORMAL.

3.    Turn the dial counter clockwise ONE click (LEFT), clockwise THREE clicks (RIGHT), counter clockwise ONE click (LEFT) then clockwise ONE click (RIGHT).

4.    Now press the start button.

5.    All the cycle indicating lights should be illuminated.

6.    Press the Start Stop button once.

7.    Rotate the dial until Rinse, Wash, and Stop light illuminate.

8.    Turn the washer off and unplug it for 10 seconds.

9.    Finally, turn on the washer and it should now be reset.

10.                Run a test load empty to be sure the reset worked. If not perform the reset procedure one more time.

Any appliance troubleshooters out there who would pls share further insights?

Thank you,

Charles.

Charles,

Did you hear a clicking noise or a repeated click-click-click coming from the top of the washer?
In most cases, issues with the lid locking are caused by a faulty lid lock. If you haven’t replaced it before, I’d recommend starting with that.

Here’s the lid lock part number for your washer: W10404050
And here’s a helpful video on how to replace it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKxD0oFM85I

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Coming into this late. But in case maksym's solution did not work I thought I would reply.

There is a service manual in a plastic bag inside the washer. It is where you knee would hit the machine when you are using the controls. If you can reach in from the bottom of your model it is easy to get. If not you may need to dismantle the unit some. I believe  the correct doc for your model at this link.

There is a service mode that lets test the lid lock manually. There are also error codes that can be read to see what function did not work and forced the microprocessor to stop the machine.

There is a video that shows how to manually run the service tests here...

The service manual also has a wiring diagram if the fault is not in the lid lock.
Just adding what I know from repairing my washer

Hi Maksym and Charlie,

Thank you both so much for your kind help.

The Service Manual shares how to test which was helpful but doesn't really offer how to diagnose and fix a lid lock.

That video is helpful in showing how to replace a lid lock - I've had to learn so much over the past 18 months in carpentry, painting, restoring, using all sorts of power tools to fix my house along with learning a lot of 3D printing and all sorts of tech so I'm in overload mode (no pun intended).

I doubt I'll be the guy who replaces a lid lock but maybe after 6 months of no clothes washer I'll be more inclined?

I was hoping there was some video (or screenshots) showing you what to look for in a fixable or broken lid lock and little things you can do to fix it.

Ex. I cleaned the lid lock 3 weeks ago and then it worked. But I tried cleaning it again and it did nothing.

We all know how to recognize a flat tire on a car. Some of us know how to change a flat and I;ve doe ti for many and taught many others.

How do I recognize a small thing(s) I could do besides cleaning out a lid lock "cave area" - dark lit area where the lid locks in?

Also, if you've ordered a lid lock or washer parts where did you buy them from?

The manufacturer? Amazon?

Thank you ever so much.

Best,

Charles.

I had purchased my parts off of amazon, after getting the part number off partsselect's site.
Maksvm provided the part number below and a quick search shows amazon and a ton of other places. Even home depot has a knock off if you ship to store. This is one seemed reasonable and called out your washer's part number.
https://www.amazon.com/Upgraded-W10404050-W10238287-Compatible-Whirl-pool/dp/B0DG21S41M/

Otherwise search google for the part number W10404050

Good luck
