Hi all,
My team is collecting camera-trapping pictures of beavers in a protected area and we can recognise individuals from tail scales for abundance count.
I was wondering if SCR models could be used for such a species, since individuals spend most of the time in their lodges located in the ponds (everything else on land should therefore be masked out) and only go on short excursions for browsing, which is when we detected them. 
My doubt concerns the modelling framework, as I can't seem to imagine spatial density estimates for species whose activity centre is known (the lodge).

Stefano,

Just a couple of thoughts on your problem. First, beaver (my experience is with Castor canadensis) sometimes have dens in river banks, which may be more difficult to detect. I don't know if your system might have a substantial portion of the population using bank dens. You could potentially treat this as a 2-level estimation problem where you first estimate the number of dens and then estimate the number beavers per den. Each level would require different data collection methods but could readily be combined into a single population estimate.

The question is how to think of the population (the state variable) and Duane gave you some strong leads there. If the population indeed exists only at discrete known points (lodges) then we're in new territory that I, at least, haven't thought through.
