I took this course last summer and highly recommend it - it is fun learning coding that can be used with all grade levels (Scratch Jr for our lower elementary students). It is free unless you take it for graduate credit from UNI (only $100)! You don't have to be the “computer teacher” to use Scratch with students. All students (and adults) should learn to code! Here are the details from Ben, the UNI instructor: For the third summer in a row UNI will be offering an online course to teach participants how to program with Scratch. Scratch is a free, online programming environment that allows students to tell stories, create animations, produce interactive artwork, and even make their own video games. This online course will be open from June 6 to July 15th. Participants will have six weeks to complete six units of study at their own pace. The entire course will take most participants 20-25 hours of study and programming time. It is NOT required that you complete one unit per week. Thus, if you have a vacation or a additional responsibilities during part of the course - NO PROBLEM. The only requirement is that you complete all six units by the July 15th deadline. If you are interested in taking the course for personal knowledge, the course is absolutely free. If you are interested in one graduate credit through the University of Northern Iowa, the cost is only $100. This credit will be credit/no-credit only (not graded) which makes it appropriate for license renewal PD or payscale advancement in most states but will not normally count towards graduate degrees. To informally register for the course please use the following link. http://bit.ly/1RPTN1a Those teachers interested in graduate credit will receive separate information in a few weeks.
