Writing JACKIE AND THE BOOKS SHE LOVED was a journey and a labor of love. I was eight years old when John F. Kennedy was inaugurated. Jackie did so much to change the role of the First Lady. I remember Jackie for the White House restoration and especially how she led the country in mourning her husband when he was assassinated in 1963.

I was very lucky to be involved in the illustration process from a say in the choice of the illustrator to collaborating with him on the art. I gave illustration notes to my editor, but since I have quite an extensive collection of books about Jackie and the Kennedys with great photographs, I was very much involved with the illustrations. I shared many photographs with Bats. For example, the horse statue on the cover is just like the statue she had on her piano in her New York apartment.

I am a para librarian for an inner city Title 1 school with a budget of 0 dollars! We also live close to the JFK library and our 4th graders just recently did a field trip there. Would love to have this book to add to my collection and to continue their education of the Kennedy family.

Your book is going to be a super great success. So detailed about every aspect of your character throughout her life. The reasons you included her favorite sentences, the blue color, the cake recipe. Just reading I can see the hours devoted to research and a personal admiration and connection with the First Lady. Thank you so much for your creation, it is not a book only for children, it is an educational book for the whole country. Good luck for this book and for the many more to follow.

Thank you so much for sharing your writing story Ronni! As an aspiring writer it helps so much to see your process of a picture book. So many wonderful details about the First Lady make this book a treasure!

Today, we shine the spotlight on Tara Grana, BSN, RN. She not only excelled in our program but has since embarked on a journey of inspiring and guiding the next generation of nurses. As an advisor for RN to BSN students here at the College of Nursing, Tara brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion to the table. She provides guidance for those navigating the transition from registered nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

My nursing journey began in high school science class. I loved every topic in biology, particularly dissecting animals, which then led me down a path of wanting to be in the operating room during surgery. I applied to the University of Kentucky (UK), was accepted as a pre-nursing student, and started the traditional track my sophomore year. During the summers back home in TN, I worked in an OB/GYN office and fell in love with women's health. After my junior year OB rotation, I knew I wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse. Immediately after graduation and passing the NCLEX, I started my first job as an RN across the street at UKHC. I cross-trained and worked in labor and delivery, mother-baby, and the nursery. I truly enjoyed working with both mothers and babies in the patient setting. I also worked at Central Baptist briefly and then transitioned to (prn) school nursing as I stayed home to raise my three kids. I have been with the College of Nursing since 2017 in student affairs (advising and recruiting) and love helping to guide associate degree nurses on their academic journey to obtain their BSN through the 100% online RN-BSN track!

Because of my background of both being a student and working as a nurse at UK, I can advise the students on particular nursing specific issues or challenges that I may have faced that they too may be facing during their time in the track. My goal is to guide them through their journey toward accomplishing their goal: a BSN. I appreciate their excitement during their final few advising sessions when they are told they can now 'apply for their degree.'

I was in a sorority and lived in the Kappa Delta house during my sophomore, junior, and senior years. One of the main reasons I lived there for three years was the house's prime location to the College of Nursing. I could quickly walk back and forth without worrying about parking and always had a delicious meal waiting for me, no matter what my schedule looked like that semester. Quick access to class, parking, and food are all very important to a student!

I have three main points of advice. First, they have picked a career that will serve them well during their future life transitions. There will always be a need for work-ready RNs, so if there is ever a time that they question their path, they can find comfort in knowing their hard work will pay off over a lifetime with a plethora of opportunities to use their high-demand science degree to help others, whether that is on the floor in a hospital, in a clinic, as a school nurse, healthcare sales, teaching in an academic setting, medical mission, graduate-level research, healthcare systems leadership, and even advising future nurses. The list can go on and on!

Secondly, they will inevitably encounter many patients, some more kind and memorable to them than others. Do not let challenging patients discourage them. Stay confident and professional; do not take things personally.

My third and last point is that they may be the one bright spot in a not-so-bright event in someone's life. They may never know what a blessing their compassion and comfort meant to a patient. So, always strive to provide the best care so that when they go home after their shift, they have confidence in knowing they made a positive difference in the life of a patient and their family.

The UK College of Nursing values its graduates and wants to stay connected with nursing alumni! If you have a spotlight suggestion, please email our Alumni Program Coordinator today at Brittan...@uky.edu.

Workshops, boot camps, and books are in ample supply for authors and illustrators looking to develop their craft. Have there been any training and development groups, classes, or books that made a significant mark on you in your publishing journey? What was it about them that stand out? Are there any current offerings you highly recommend people consider to develop writing skills, publishing industry knowledge, relationship building, sales, communication or presentation skills, etc.?

A lot of the things I wish I would have known I have put on my blog. Number one is being prolific and not to pin your hopes on only one manuscript. Move past that first thing you wrote. By writing more stories, you will better at it! Fixing one story will only get you so far. And, the writing could be perfection but the subject might not click with an editor. So create a lot of ideas and multiple manuscripts!

Storystorm is something I started on a whim and never realized how beloved the challenge would become! Then it dawned on me after a few years into it, that having a treasure trove of ideas was the key to my own success.

Tara: Cooking was definitely always a part of my life. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved cooking with my parents. They were really interested in whole foods and health, and I picked up a lot of cooking knowledge from them. I was also in 4-H as a kid, and I did an exhibit and won a blue ribbon for how to pack a picnic on an outdoor adventure! But I didn't get into the outdoors aspect of things for quite a while.

Tara: I first met my partner, Tyler, ten years ago, and he sent me a text message and asked me to sell everything and go biking around the world with him. At that time, I was not a cyclist at all, and I had only camped maybe two or three times in my life before that. But I said yes, and we started planning and preparing. Because I didn't know anything about cycle touring, I didn't have any preconceived notions of what people normally ate outdoors. I just decided I was going to cook the food that I cooked at home, and so I made sure I had my pot and pan that I liked, and I assumed I was going to go grocery shopping and cook as we traveled, and that's what I ended up doing. So, if I was craving something, I would find a way to make a camp version of it. We ended up spending two years on a bicycle, camping and cooking every day, and while I had a lot of cooking experience, all of my camping experience happened during that time.

Tara: Well I guess it depends how you define world tour! We started in Scotland and ended up in Southeast Asia, with a very meandering route in between. We blogged the whole experience at goingslowly.com every day of our adventure. We probably had 700 or so journal entries from that time with all of our photos, routes, and maps. It was a very long trip. We ended up traveling through most of Europe, some of North Africa, and then we had a meandering adventure across Russia and Mongolia before finally playing around in Southeast Asia.
