Think your wireless network is secure? Think again. Researchers in
Germany have discovered that wireless networks protected with just a
104-bit WEP key are no longer considered secure.
According to their study, a 104-bit WEP key can be extracted in about
three seconds. What is really fascinating is that this is being done
on a machine powered by a 1.7GHz Pentium M. Previous methods for
cracking WEP keys took considerably longer, and required beefier
hardware.
According to the research group there are two measures that need to be
taken in order to insure your network will remain secure. First, they
recommend some type of intrusion detection software. The other being a
cloak of dummy WEP keys.
