Hi Sontosh dai
Thank you for your email and attempt to bring our dai/bhai and didi/bahini together. SEBS-UK gathering is long due. May be we should have it soon.
We can help Mr. Khulal in so many ways both in policies and practices.
There is a long list of suggestions compiled by Suresh Pd. Acharya dai (139A) on SEBS Facebook page, which I have provided all SEBS UK members for review and comments.
Two things we could start immediately:
1) Collaborate with all SEBS chapters to raise more fund for SEBS activities. Perhaps we could use existing resources (manpower) from SEBS Nepal to compile an up to date SEBS members list, contact details andstart raise funding. Perhaps we can target for about 1 crore, which is achievable. (NRs. 3000 each from 35,000 members. This will give cash to build SEBS Complex at BNKS provided BNKS gives us land. Help Nepal network has recent launched 10 crore initiatives. We can also integrate some components including social activities to make it appealing with other donations towards the cause.
2) In order to play our part, it is also important to help BNKS collect its dues from Ex-students. I am sure the School authority will provide us with the necessary information and documentation. If there is a need we could use naming and shaming but I am sure we do not have to do it. It is simply NOT fair for SEBSers to not to pay the amount despite receiving so much benefits from BNKS.
3) If
any opportunity arises in some of the projects I am collaborating with Professors here where we need grassroot level support, SEBS can be integrated in them. If we get the money, our Yarsagumba project and one in Energy Garden should start next year. I can accommodate SEBSers in the Dolpa areas for our Yarsagumba project if we get the funding.
4) There are so many SEBSers who can collaborate to get some money for advocacy work in Nepal an we can write proposal
together for the grants. Now we have sufficient social capital within SEBS, we need to convert it into CAPITAL CAPITAL (at the end of the day, it boils downs to bucks!).
More later from me but here is the list from Suresh dai, which I have copied from Facebook page.
Recommendations to the Principal Designate Mr Keshar Khulal
(also for the information of SEBS Ex-comm)
I am confident that Mr Kehar Khulal bhai, would established himself as an ideal Principal in the BNKS history, because of his sober and impeccable character backed with excellent rapport with all the stakeholders of BNKS, sound academic knowledge-base, the deep experience as Vice Principal and member of the School Management Team (SMT) having both academic and management gaps and challenges of the BNKS.
However, as his
responsibility has increased, the challenges ahead him are horculean and formidable. Some of these are:
1) In twenty years, though Budhanilkantha School's examination results have been satisfactory, but many have witnessed that there is a paucity of quality education and life skills imparted to students.
2) Most of the old infrastructures, buildings of BNKS are in the depleted state, without any good renovation work undertaken in the last 20 years. In many places the school boundary wall is out of sight.
3) The school-land of about 400 out of 752 Ropanies have been not been properly utilized, otherwise the school kitchen would have got daily supplies of mushrooms, potatoes, green vegetables, rice etc.
4) The food served at BNKS is one of the worst in Kathmandu's renowned schools, which need immediate consideration.
5) Safety of students needs to be given the highest priority, and discipline has to be
maintained at any cost like in other academic institutions. As a BOT & SMC member, me and others had to repeatedly complain at the BOT & SMC meetings about BNKS students "roaming" around downtown in their "school uniform" during school days.
6) The objectives and aims of BNKS need to be revisited, because the aim of opening up a deemed university by the out-going Principal should be discarded by the new Principal-Designate as well as expanding school enrollment capacity need to stop to maintain the quality and safety of students. Instead, opening branch-schools in different regions of the country need to be given priority.
7) Mr Khulal should immediately initiate a process with the backing of Ministry of Education (MOE) about investigating of irregularities and favoritism in student admissions by a team of experts.
8) The Alma Mater, has never been supportive to its Alumni on "institutional basis", hence
there is good scope of working on this area that could help school ethically and morally in hours of need, and on augmenting resources for the school as per its need.
9) Due to mistakes of school administration in the past, the school teachers and staffs are divided in different groups. Today, it has become a harse reality for the degradation of the BNKS reputation.
a) Hence, the Principal-Designate should "open-up dialogues" with all stakeholders with "open heart and mind" immediately followed by a press meet. This will help to "renew" relations with school students, alumni, parents, teachers, staffs and well-wishers.
b) He should hold a "Press Meet" to discuss his plans and programmes, and school's gaps and challenges ahead within a month from today. This will also build relations with the press and media.
10) Also, every year, before Annual School Budget Planning is undertaken, there should be at least one "Public
Hearing" held with all stakeholders, and after six months at least one follow-up "Public Hearing" need to be held in presence of the Principal and SMC members, so that the bonds get stronger between the stakeholders and all stakeholders have informed understanding of gaps and challenges of BNKS. This would create a history for the Principal-Designate.
11) Restructuring of BNKS organisation and legal framework is due since a long time. The constitution of the school needs revision. The roles of BOT & SMC are very different in nature. BOT is the property-holder or owner of BNKS, whereas, SMC has the roles to play in school management. Since, BNKS is government's property, BOT should be headed by the Secretary of Education, whereas, SMC could be headed by any persons who have sound knowledge and experience in teaching, management etc.. The Principal should be made directly accountable to the SMC.
Best,
Bishnu
