I hadn’t seen this “history of Heathkit” video, so perhaps others haven’t either. As with so many things on the Internet it’s not clearly date stamped so not sure how recent this is…

I found it interesting, though I seriously doubt the narrator is speaking of his personal experiences!

enjoy.

It was posted on YouTube a couple days ago.  I was going to post it to FB but decided not to after watching it.  It is fairly accurate regarding the early history however, not so much from the '60s on.  BTW - Question number 3 in the quiz is wrong.  Heathkit did produce a microwave oven in kit form... I repaired them when I worked for Heathkit.

Thanks for posting this link. It is mostly accurate, but thin. My dad knew Howard Anthony, and was familiar with his early days in Dowagiac, and then Benton Harbor. This history left out a lot of details.

The oscilloscope pictured is an OL-1, a later model. The original O-1 had a yellowish front panel, and cruder markings. There's a picture of it on the Heathkit wikipedia page. The ham radios called the SB series were actually earlier "Indian" rigs (Apache, Seneca, Mohican, etc.)

Zenith wasn't the only owner. Heath was bought and sold a number of times (Schlumberger, Daystrom, Group Bull). Sadly, they tended to treat Heath as an unimportant step-child.

Personally, I think Heath would have had a better chance of surviving if it could have stuck to its own kit market, where it was the "biggest frog in the pond". The kit market today is still thriving, by offering unique products that you can't buy assembled.
