I've been wanting to get a universal programmer for some projects later down the road.  I'm looking at the TL866 ii-plus   -  the model Glenn showed me earlier.

Looks like still a few on Amazon at a reasonable price that are not clones.  The 866 has been superceded by some newer versions that are quite pricey and maybe overkill for my needs. Seems software is still available for 866 download.

Is the TL866 ii-plus sufficient for anything I'll want to do in the H8/H89 world?

It will work fine for most modern parts, however if you need to burn older EPROMs (2716s, etc.) you'll want to look at a programmer capable of handling 25V parts.  I think the newer version ??-48 programmer may do them.  Check the specs.

Thanks for pointing that out Joe.  You’re right - VPP on the T48 goes up to 25V.   And still within budget.

An additional complication: Heath used TI's 3-supply version of the 2716, which needs +5v, +12v, and -5v! It's very hard to find a programmer that can program them. Luckily, Heath included jumper options so we can use modern single-supply replacements. If you change the EPROMs on a Heath board to a modern replacement be *SURE* you change the jumpers accordingly!

I agree with Lee.  There's a reason I have 3 different EPROM programmers, although I could get away with just two.  I have to use my DataIO 29B for the TI 2716s.
