Anyone know of a good (and cheap) eprom programmer that will program a
2708 chip? All the programmers I see list 2716 and higher, but not the
2708. Looking at the specs, the programming is a bit different for the
2708 than it is for the 2716. I believe the 2708 requires +5V, +12V
and -5V while the 2716 requires +25V but I could be wrong here.

I'd like to make copies of a lot of my Heathkit ROMs for backups.

Why not just use the 2716 and ground the un-needed addres pin?

I purchased an Eprom programmer from here http://www.geocities.com/xumicro/

They are very reasonably priced and the one I received works great. I have
had it for about 1 year and have not had any problems.

I forget all the details but a long time ago I took a programmer and
merged the ROM on the Processor board and the one on the H17 into one
ROM (I think it was a 2716) that is installed on the Z80 board. I had to
add some wires to make it work but it works just fine.

Hi Les
I have an old Data I/O model 19 that does 2708's. The last time I
needed
to do this, I found it easier to just use a 2716 as others have
suggested.
I have a programmer by Needham that is inside the PC and is simpler to
use.
I took two machine pin sockets. On one, I removed the two voltage
pins
and the other made one jumper to ground and one to +5. I stuck these
two
together. Now, I just put the 2716 on the top of the stack. It works
fine and
it is simpler to deal with the 2716s.
Much easier than dragging out the 19 and finding the right serial
cable.
