Hello all,
I've been lurking for while. First post. I've been wanting an H10 forever and finally found one at a not-terrible price. It's the H10A, which I hadn't come across before.

Can anyone point me at an assembly manual and schematic for the H10A? I'm trying to figure out what the differences are between the models.

I'd also be interested in some 1" fanfold tape if anyone has some they want to sell on.

Thank you
Peter Kerr

Peter: I’m not expert (at all – I’ve never even seen one of these beasts) but I recall there were reliability issues with the H10 and Heath addressed them, so I’m guessing that was the H10A.

Wondering if this was the H10 that had a Buy It Now for only $650 on eBay recently (if you don’t want to comment that’s fine).  That was quite a steal!

There’s been some discussion of paper for these (and the need for it to be oiled).

The manuals have been archived but, unfortunately, I don’t know where they live. Not on SEBHC site.

So hopefully someone will chime in with thoughts on paper tape and the documentation…

Congratulations. We’ll all be anxious to hear how things go!

Hi Glenn,
Yeah. That was the one. I think I got very lucky. I've been watching them for over a year and when this one came up I hit the button as soon as I saw it.

Ironically,  I was at VCF SoCal at the time. I'd gone hoping to maybe find a seller with an H10.....

Here's a link to all of the H10 docs that I have.

Thanks Joe.
Funny thing. I thought that zip looked familiar and I found a copy I'd previously downloaded. I think Steven Hirsch posted it? I had his name in my notes.

I don't have an H8 yet (I'm doing it backwards and started with the H10),  so my plan this weekend is to replicate Stevens wiring and try out his python scripts. I think I have everything I need to make chads!

biggest issue ive had with my h10 was the chatter pilling up underneath it clogging up the punch

theyre nice if u look after them

Thanks for the links Norby. I had not seen that archive before - lots of new stuff there.

Unfortunately, all the paper tape stuff is for the H10 version. I already have docs for that. I was hoping to find a set of H10A docs so I could figure out what the differences were.

As memory serves, the H10A uses improved punches and solenoids.  I believe the new punches are harder, similar to tool steel.  I don't recall any other changes.

Peter,

when you mentioned the H10 i remember seeing the manuals for that in my pile-o-stuff. I found the Assembly and Operation manuals for the H10 (not the 10A). you are welcome to these if you want them. Looks like the schematic is there also.

Hi Ron,
I have some scans of the H10 manuals already, but if you are referring to the Heathkit original copies then I would very much love them!

Understood on them being H10 vs H10A. I think the changes are pretty limited and the H10 manuals would get me a long way.

I'll message you directly to figure out details.

Thanks Joe.
I've got a bad scan of the schematic for the H10A. I sat down with a highlighter and the H10 schematic tonight and made a list of changes. Not many really. They made some changes to the debounce circuit for the feed switch as well adding additional logic gates on the READER_READY and REASER_START signals. This resulted in a new main circuit board - with different part number. They've also changed the some of the diodes connected to the transformer.

The solenoids have the same part part number stamped on them as the H10 version - whatever that's worth.

No idea about the mechanical changes yet.

I'm very much geeking out on this. It's been on my bucket list for a couple years. Once I get it working, my plan is to document the changes from the H10 as best I can and then pass them on to someone at SEBHC to archive. I'll also clean up the schematic and pass it on. I figure some of these improvements might become a "todo list" for anyone else restoring one of these.

If there's anyone on the group who has an H10 in reasonable arms reach and wouldn't mind swapping photos occasionally, I'd be happy to work with them.

Pete
