I added the H8 Chassis CAD to the website. The format is for SolidWorks .sldprt files. Hopefully soon we will be able to build such chassis and upgrade it as needed.

Beautiful work. I think we have your son to thank? Great!

I’m guessing the setup costs would be high for re-creation of the actual sheet metal chasis? But could send this to some metal shops and see what they say?  I would think you’d need quantities in the dozens or even hundreds of units to make this worthwhile? The aluminum front panel is much simpler (a few cut-outs and bends) and might be more easily reproduced.

However with these spec’s as a guide we could create alternative cases (e.g. plexiglass) that largely conform to the original size. For those who will house only more modern boards (H8-2000+) the convection cooling needs would be significantly less and a solid top panel would be a possibility…

Indeed! He gets his engineering bachelor degree this May. 😊

I will like to get a quote just for fun and then we can look at alternatives as you mentioned.

Also I asked the S-100 Chassis group for feedback/help for the H8 Chassis.

Could these be exported to a format that would allow us to open them?  I'm thinking DXF or some other format so we can use an open source cross platform tool to preserve them.

Possible Formats: PARASOLID, ACIS, STEP, IGES, SOLIDWORKS, JT, COLLADA, RHINO, GLTF, OBJ, STL.

Let me know which one works for you.

Thanks,

Norberto

I could use both IGES and STL formats.
Thank you,
Craig

STEP is likely the best format.  One could then import into Freecad or other applications for example.
STEP imported into Freecad will also allow one to modify or edit the design.

STL is a horrible format for allowing changes later.

The minimum I need are the dimensions and or profiles of the parts.  For that STL will work splendidly.

I am a happy owner of a H8-2023 (1 week old!)  due to the generous support, mentoring and expertise of Les Bird.  Les informed me that without an enclosure I own a "Naked H8".  So I'm embarking on a DIY enclosure design I am calling the NN-H8 for "Not Naked H8".

The current concept is to 3D print the sides in two pieces each, from my own design, using OpenScad which is the tool I'm most comfortable with.
As I have no H8 enclosure to take measurements from, STL files will work for that purpose.  I'm planning to use high grade plywood for the bottom and 3D design (2 or more pieces) for the front panel.  The top and back panels designs are not fully conceptualized although I have a window vent insert that has stamped louvers in it, just don't know if it will work until the rest of the case is designed. As there are no voltage regulators on the boards and a fan on the Mini-ITX power supply, I may get away without an extra fan or add a 120 mm fan mounted to the left side.

Cheers,
Craig

Craig, congrats on your H8 -- Les has designed some excellent boards! I'm interested to follow your progress in making a case. I looked into this a couple times myself. Making the sides would not be too difficult -- they could just be cut from wood. Making the front panel is where I always hit a mental block and couldn't figure out the next steps. The front panel is iconic and the bends in the sheet metal make an H8 look like an H8. I'm sure it could be duplicated, but it would be nice to see someone write up a recipe, or better yet find a company that could produce them to specification. It's just a cut and bent sheet of metal, it's not rocket science, but it's a skill I don't have. I would love to manufacture myself another H8 case or two.

As for the top, my current H8 was originally missing its top. While I did eventually find a used replacement, my backup was going to be to use a sheet of acrylic or plexiglass. This would have the advantage of making it easy to see the boards inside. The modern boards do not generate nearly as much heat as the old vintage boards did.

Best of luck on your project,
Scott

Scott, thank you for the encouragement.   I really liked your paper tape YouTube video.

I plan to 3D print the front panel, in 2 or more pieces, fill, sand, and paint to get a reasonable finish.

All plans and designs will appear in my GitHub repo once I get the initial designs done.

Cheers,
Craig
