H8-USB STATUS REV 1.1 board

Tested the final H8-USB board and it is working fine. I will do more testing tomorrow and if everything continues to work as expected, then I will proceed to send out the PayPal invoices. Attached are some pictures of the new board (Rev1.1). I added to this board the status LED’s, tie-wrap holes for the VDIP1 IC,  and the INT5 for the FT245 chip, plus the surface mount part. Otherwise is fully compatible with Rev 1.0 and same utilities software will work fine on both boards.

 

I tested the FT245 with the “BOB-07841 - Breakout Board for FT245RL USB to FIFO “ from SparkFun and so far so good. There is a surface mount FT245 circuitry for those interested in soldering such part. No testing has been done when the FT245 is soldered to the board.  I expect that it will work as the breakout board does (I do have some FT245RL surface mount parts if someone needs some). The VCCIO section is powered by the H8 regulator and also it can be powered by the USB (jumper selectable).

 

The VDIP1 USB flash device or pendrive is working fine. I copied files from it and to it without any issues. There is a second USB port connected to the VDIP1 board and that one (for me) will be used to attached a USB printer that I already have ready for it.

 

I assembled three boards and they all worked on power-on without any issues. Please take the time to assembled such boards to avoid issues down the road; put the quality and a lot of love into it. Next steps is to write the assembly instructions and the BOM.

USB printer support is a low priority right now. Downloading/uploading H8D images via the flash device is a higher one.

USB printer support may be really hard(nearly impossible) on these old systems. I think many of the cheap printers do not have much more than the printhead mechanism in it. All the logic and control are included in the drivers. The goal is to reduce price, just like the winmodems that relied on the processing of the CPU to handle all the things that would normally be handled in a controller on the modem. If that is the case, it may require more than a 64k H8 is able to handle. You may want to look for drivers under linux, to see what would be required.

right.  on the file transfer side all the software smarts (FAT file system) are embedded in the VDIP firmware, but maybe not so for printing.  as Norberto says the focus for now is on file transfer.  i have a very early version of those working

since the VDIP supports subdirectories one idea I'm toying with is a utility (say "VLIB") that would let you quickly  find and select a directory with a specified set of software - think of it as a software "jukebox".  each subdirectory could contain, say, one of the HUG library disks.  you could take each H8D image and put its content in a directory.  you could easily fit every piece of HDOS and CP/M software that we have on a single USB flash drive!

you'd need a table of some kind to navigate and search the space.  saying "VLIB C80," for example, might select the C/80 disk contents and then you could copy any files you need from there using the VGET utility. or VLIB MAPLE to select the maple disk contents, or PASCALMT+, etc.  once we create a master image it would be easy enough to duplicate the USB FLASH drive (using a PC or Linux) to anyone who wants it.  imagine carrying every piece of Heath 8Bit software ever written with you in your pocket! (and being able to easily search/find any program or file!)

it would be agnostic about OS.  you could use it to move files from CP/M to HDOS and vice versa since it would be visible on both Operating systems.  USCD Pascal too (if we ever get that working!).

Can anyone download HDOS files vi Maple or other means to their H8 HDOS system? If the answer is no, please let me know what media you can take to supply the HDOS USB utilities to support Dan and Glenn development. The sooner the better so that I can sort all this out.

 

Also I can image my Z67-IDE card into the website which contains all the development tools/utilities.

On the files deployment, I think is better to get the 5.25” floppy puncher heated up and create hard sectored floppies to deploy the util tools. Once everyone is enabled, then the file transfer via USB will become the easier process for updates. I’m not planning to charge for the floppy media and these are brand new diskettes.

I was punching a soft sector into hard sector, but the puncher sometimes does not cut the hole as expected. I guess that the end of this task.

Norberto,

If you have not used the punch very much, it may need a "break in"
period as the tolerances are pretty tight and the pin may hang up in
the guide hole or other issues may cause it to drag. You may have to
do a few disks to break it in.

My experience was that you want to hit the punch head pretty hard to really
get it moving so that it makes it all the way through with plenty of force
to punch the hole cleanly.

Chris Elmquist has an acquaintance with a machine shop who made some of these for the group.  My understanding is he’s not interested in fabricating any more – I think this was a lot of work for small return, plus it sounds like he’s got other challenging projects to work on.  It’s a very clever and simple device, but it’s a manual process to punch the holes.  Takes 5-10 minutes per disk.  The results have been great though.  If people are willing to send me disks I can punch them and send them back.  Please be reasonable though since it is a manual process…

It's possible. There are probably other design approaches that would
work too. The original idea was Dwight's and after we started the first
build, we made a few modifications to improve usability. The current ones
are made from delrin, stainless and aluminum. The punch pin is stainless.

Good chance they will last several lifetimes-- which, might be slightly
overkill :-)
