Have any of you ever had any reproductions of the Heath Computing metal case badges and/or stickers made?  If so, who did you use and how was your experience?

Thanks!

An assortment, but I was just kind of wondering in general.  At some point I'll need a couple of the 1/2 x 2 3/4 stamped metal "Heath Computer Systems" badges for an HS-161 keyboard and a H-158 keyboard that are missing theirs, if I recall correctly.  One of the bigger ones for something, but I can't remember which one was missing its badge off the top of my head...  Maybe it was an H-138, I don't recall.  I imagine the flat sticker-like ones will be pretty easy to have made somewhere, but the stamped metal ones are probably out of reach as far as reproductions.

None of these are projects I'll get back to very soon.  Was just kind of wondering in general, if anyone had previously looked into making reproductions.

I would be interested in an H8 computer badge reproduction.

A while back, I had three-color dry transfers made for the H8 front panel emblem.  I was satisfied with applying it directly to the case, but I also made several where the transfer was first mounted to a piece of 1/8" black acrylic to provide the 3D effect of the original.  The PDF I used for the transfer pattern is attached.  Several group members received these transfers and might have one they don't intend to use.

I believe that Glenn Roberts made some badges using a pTouch.

Mounting Terry’s dry transfer on acrylic gives a nice simulation of the original H8 badge:

If you have the plastic badge piece but are missing the orange H8 sticker (or it is damaged) I had good luck producing one with the pTouch label maker

https://photos.app.goo.gl/kAYTSx5Mp28HGJVVA

the same plastic badge holder was used on a bunch of Heath gear (H8, H17, H14, H9, etc) so those could be reused in this manner if you have a “junker” version of any of those. I think the attached file is the pTouch template that I used to produce this label (use orange day glow tape).

I can’t comment on how easy it would or would not be to reproduce the Heath plastic badge holder, but I’ve seen some pretty impressive 3-D printing results from similar efforts so wouldn’t be surprised if someone with the right expertise could make a pretty nice replica.

If there is group interest in reproducing Terry’s work someone would have to volunteer to lead that. I’m sure Terry could point you to where he got these made and where to get black acrylic.

As to Lee’s original question about metal tags (e.g. for his H158 keyboard): there appear to be many companies providing services for laser engraving metal plates and tags. I suspect all you need to provide is the appropriate artwork … and the appropriate amount of $$$  😊

I had thought about resin printing for the bas relief badges or whatever you call them (I don't think regular 3d printing would be high enough resolution though), but I don't know how to get the colors on it right.  With regular 3d printing you could switch filaments before printing the raised stuff, but yeah too low rez I suspect.

I think the original Heath plastic badges were injection molded and then the raised lettering was painted white with something like a rubber roller.  You could do something similar but with a 3-D printer.

Yeah, I guess for the raised-relief stamped metal badges like these I ought to just look into having metallic stickers made and call that "good enough".  I can't think of any reasonable way to make a good facsimile of these with home-shop tools.  :(

Oh that note, I wonder what fonts Heath used for their different badges over the years.  I should compile a document if nobody has already done so.

Anyone like to have this badge from an H9?
Maybe change it to H8 or other...

Tom

If you could take some closer photos from different angles to highlight the raised areas, we could take a stab at generating a model for a 3-d print.

I've taken what I hope are decent photos of the Heathkit H9 case badge.
Here's a link to the photos.  let me know if there are questions or issues.

Likewise, I would be happy to make whatever measurements you need need, on mine with a digital caliper.

Assuming it's the same as the H11 badge with a different sticker, that is.
