Lot of 10 WDC'82,WD2797PL-02 From EBAY.

Of the tube of 10, 9 tested good, all tests, on the Backbit Chip Tester Pro V2.

Someone wanted to know.

The 4, I bought from Quest Components all tested good.  The picture on EBAY is not representative of the actual chips. With the exceptions of the date codes, the markings are the same as from Quest, although the font in a little smaller.

I have not yet tested the chips in a real floppy controller.  That will probably be a bit of time yet…..

I’m interested on the eBay ones if they do actually work on  real floppy controller.

What exactly do these chips do?  Where are they used on the 89?

Thanks,

Fred

These are the “brains” of the soft-sectored floppy controller.

Minor correction: The WD2797 is the "brains" of Norberto's replacement soft-sector controller. Heath's original Z89-37 soft-sector controller used the WD1709 + WD1691 + WD2143. The WD2797 combines the functions of these three ICs, but the circuit is different (i.e. it's not pin-compatible).

Right! Thanks Lee. And, interestingly, when Norberto recently repaired an original Heath ‘37 board and was unable to find the original controller chip he actually fabricated a daughterboard to let him use the WD2797 as a replacement!

Correction: The H37 controller for the H89 and H8 along with the H207 controller for the H/Z100 all used the WD1797, not WD1709.

The WD1797 was also used by CDR, MMS and others for their H89 soft sector controllers.

The new WD2797 works fine on the Heath H89-H37 Board . Same pins except for a few ones for circuit calibration. On the H37, just a single wire on side 2 and on side 1, 2-pins needs to be lifted.

Here are some pictures:

I love this WD2797 controller..
