While we are thinking of those passing, it came as a surprise to
discover Barry Watzman died last year. We were never close friends,
but over the years would occasionally swap an email or two. I was
saddened to learn why I hadn't had a reply. I didn't always agree
with him, but I admired how passionate he could be about certain
technical decisions.

Wow, that's a shock. For those who didn't know him, Barry was Product
Manager (?) for the HZ-100 series and also involved with the H89. He wrote
the B?W editor for the '89. Hopefully, Jim, Pat and others can fill in some
details about his work at Heathkit.

Just some random recollections - Barry was a bit "prickly" but always
advocated for the end user and was always good for some inside news at HUG
conventions. He also was involved with SOL computers and rebuilding finicky
Helios disk systems. He undertook a massive document scanning project and
issued a DVD a few years ago containing his work.

Sorry to hear the news -

Jack

My first computer was a Heath/Zenith ET-100 and I bought Zenith
computers exclusively in the 1980's. When I started collecting
computers, I targeted the Zenith line and have acquired quite a few of
them.
Since 1984 I remember seeing Barry's articles and forum posts related
to information and problem solving with the Zenith line. What a shame
his life ended this way.

Sorry to hear that too. The market can drive you crazy, but putting everything in one company - no matter what the company is - is a very bad idea.

Barry had been a member of this group before it moved to google groups. I'm not sure if he rejoined after it moved. You can see some of his contributions to the original maillist on the archive at my site: http://heathkit.garlanger.com/sebhcMaillist/

He always had insightful information for the group.

Very sad story indeed. I corresponded with Barry in Nov 2008, just
after I got back into Heath stuff and re-discovered that the H19 I had
built as a kid, had Watzman ROMs installed.

I hadn't yet remembered that Barry had released all of that code to the
HUG group so I had written to him asking if I could release it to the
SEBHC archive, which he responded that he approved.

I too remember many of the articles he had written in the various Heath
publications.

Sad deal.

I think I have the original documentation and diskette that was used by HUG
to distribute his code.

Yes... I have since found it myself. At the time, I wasn't remembering
much of what I had done some 25 yrs earlier but did eventually find the
authentic HUG diskette in my collection. So, I am set with that.

Thanks Norberto.

Jack, thank for your recollections about Barry. I'm also shocked and
saddened today to read of Barry's passing. He and I corresponded and
traded documents, and occasionally verbal jabs. He provided me with
some schematics for the H/Z-100 series power supply - I'm still
helping people with repairs of those today. My Web site has numerous
quotes from his posts on Cromemco, Tarbell, and other technical
subjects.

I've started a tribute Web page on Barry. I welcome any comments and
recollections which I can add to the page. Contact me via email links
on that Web page.

Hello Herbert,

Very nice!

I have a suggestion, and that is to capture into a website the contributions of all the members that are still alive to recognize them. Once we move to our next life cycle, they will never know if there is a tribute web page for them, and perhaps forgotten forever....

Thanks,

Norberto

I'm not sure what you are suggesting. People who use the Web leave a
trail of their use. Some of us have Web sites and other resources we
create. Barry did not have a Web site I'm aware of, he was a friend
and colleage, so I did what I've done.

Persons who posted here are invited to send me content which I can add
to my Web page about Barry. So far, no one has done so. Posts in
newsgroups are of course tributes, I'm reluctant to simply grab those
(with permission as per my policy), even though they are public
content. (Usenet is in the public domain, Google Groups like this may
not be however).
