Glenn,

Yes, I owe an update on such H8 pending boards.

Status:
  1. H8-Z5-4 board ordered - waiting for pcb to verify layout
  2. H89-USB-Serial board  ordered - waiting for pcb to verify layout
  3. H8 backplane - Needs two more mods. Will release after completing the H8-5 board.
  4. H8-SSI board - Ready for production. We need to document reworks on Z80 V3.1/V4 and H17/H37/H67 boards. Reworks needed when using I/O wait states on such board. This board contains the following circuits:
  • I/O and Memory Wait State Generator
  • CPU Speed Indicator + general purpose I/O LED (supported with new front panel board)
  • Heath Parallel printer interface
  • HA-8-2 Music synthesizer / dual general purpose DACs
  • Multiplexed 8-channel ADC
  • AM9511 Arithmetic Processor Unit
  1. H8-Dual CF controller - Ready to order some sample.
  2. HA-8-3-1 - board is up and running. Need to finalized BOM and docs before releasing to production.
  3. H8-Dual GIDE controller - Board finalized - Will need to order to check pcb layout
  4. H8-DUAL SDC/CP-NET controller - need to finalize layout.
  5. Z67-SDC - In debug
  6. H8-H17 Single Board controller. Layout completed, just need to add H89 surface mount USB circuit after verifying such circuit.
  7. H8 Chassis - Need to create a new system with the new boards....
I think the above boards makes the H8 computer a powerful system for years to come. The only board that cannot design will be the H8-H47 Storage Controller as I never had one.

Thanks,
Norberto

WOW. An incredible amount of work… and many of these are near the finish line! Truly “keeping the legacy alive.” Congratulations and so many thanks for all you do, and the many SEBHC team members who provide invaluable assistance in designing, testing and documenting these boards behind the scenes. Amazing teamwork!

This is an amazing list!
I want to get the SSi board soon. Maybe after I get the Z80 board working.

Also I forgot to add the H8-Extender Board. After powering my old system, I was able to find the old Gerber files for such board. I will do the improvements that I want to add and then will order a few boards to test. Eventually you will be able to get the “NEW” H8-Extender from Todd.

For those who have such board already, any feedback on improvements are welcome.

Updates:

  1. Add 7808. Buffer data, address, and control signals to avoid H8 backplane increased noise. Some boards will fail to work on the extender, but will work fine on the H8 backplane. So the new extender will appear to be another module inserted to the H8 bus as it should be. This will improve reliability of the backplane bus when debugging or testing a new board on the H8-Extender.
  2. Board is too long and cannot insert 25 pins connectors on side 1 – I will reduce the board size.
  3. Add to side 1 – larger pads as on the latest board to support the Heath 25-pin KK-Molex connectors.
  4. Update resistors value and wattage.

Thanks,

Norberto

Nice changes. As I had no documentation when I built mine (the 2009 Norberto update to the original Carroll Waddell design) I installed the SamTec connectors on the front side only to determine they must be on the back due to board size! That was a painful mistake! I see it’s on your ToDo list to correct that. My board is quite thick, which is a good thing as it keeps things sturdy. Buffering will be a nice addition. Perhaps add contact points to attach a multimeter to measure current draw? Or even an inexpensive LED current meter right on the board? There was some discussion a while back about hardware debugging features?…

Glenn,

I kept the fuse holder in which instrumentation can be added to measure current or voltage. Also there is a header for the logic analyzer already there which I used a lot. Buffering the data, control signals, and address was a bit of a challenge. I had to add a jumper to select when the CPU is inserted to drive the buffer in one direction and when inserting I/O boards to drive the buffer in the opposite direction. I will upload the files tonight and will order a board to test it out. Hopefully the logic to drive the data bus in the right direction will work without any issues.

I just finished updating the board.

Thanks,

Norberto

Very nice!  Can’t wait to get one for pokin’ ‘round :-}.

What PN is used for the buffered bus pins/connectors?

Outstanding and amazing work! I'll definitely be needing one of these extender boards when they become available.
My son gave me one of those Digilent logic analyzers. I'm looking forward to getting that hooked up for troubleshooting.

Thanks!

I was not able to get the complete logic to work on the buffered board without adding a lot of IC’s. Good idea, but hard to implement. So, I went back to the basics and decided to only improve the previous board by adding more grounding and re-tracing the lines better. On the clock “O2” signal, I added grounding on both sides of the trace as an improvement as shown below.

It is looking much better now and it needs to be cleaned a bit better.

Thanks,

Norberto
